10 Commandments of LinkedIn Networking
1. Honour Thy Digital 1st impression.
A profile photo is a must for anyone who wants to create a great first impression on LinkedIn. Colour helps. Smiling helps. Your LinkedIn profile is the suit you wear to an interview. The whole point of networking is to be who you are (personal branding), support people and let people know you whup ass. Emulate networkers who’s style is like yours.
2. Quality over Quantity
Not much point in adding 1,000 strangers on LinkedIn. List everyone you know who thinks you are great or who knows you kick ass (at sports, at work, through education). Add them. Send them a message. Find out what they are up to.
3. Thou Shalt not be Sleazy
Too many people try to be overly businesslike on LinkedIn. Be yourself but if yourself is sleazy then maybe take a cold shower before commenting, messaging etc.
4. Serve others.
It is easy to stand out when networking online. Look fab. Intentionally comment on what people post. Introduce people who you admire and respect to each other.
5. Thou Shalt Not Sell in the first few Messages - I wish I didn't need to include this.
6. Set networking goals.
Add 5 connections a day, Comment on 3 posts a day, Post something 3 times a week; a commentary on something happening in your industry.
7. Show me the money (character/humour/kickass).
Let people see your personality on LinkedIn. If you are funny and kind then allow that light to shine online. Describing yourself as an 'Award Winning x' isn't half as compelling as a beaming picture of you holding the award and thanking people for voting for you.
8. Actively Listen.
What is someone really saying in their posts? How must they feel to post what they are commenting. Empathise and support them.
9. Connections are a beginning
Connecting with someone is the start/renewal of a relationship. Send a voice note or literally just say ‘Hi, thanks for connecting’..
10. Like Sinatra - Do it your way!
The whole point of networking is to be who you are (personal branding), support people and let people know you whup ass. Emulate networkers who’s style is like yours. Don't try to be someone you are not.
Awesome article! I need to be reminded of this all the time. In fact, it would be cool to make this into a "LinkedIn Cheat Sheet" for posts and for profile creation. Thanks for posting!
Nice one! Well done, Michael! 💪🔥⚡
Great tips Michael
Loved them all but No 2 spoke to me because too often folks are overly focused on quantity instead of quality. Brilliant tips and so spot on!
