How to save $120k lost revenue by cleaning a customer list When you’re starting your ecommerce business, you do everything to get things moving. I know because I did it myself in 2020. I begged, stole, borrowed that first sale by any means necessary. And nothing beat the feeling when it came. Okay, it was half price, to an old work friend who probably didn’t even need it, but still. However, once things got moving, it was obvious this wouldn’t cut it anymore. That big old prospect list I farmed from some dodgy agency was causing more problems than it’s worth. It was getting: -Low sales -High unsubscribes -Spam complaints rising -Deliverability, reputation and brand, all suffering because of it Poor deliverability means revenue-generating emails never reach customers: -Failed promo campaigns -Lost customers from checkout abandonment -Disconnected upsells And, down the chain: -Lost repeat purchase revenue -Referral revenue (satisfied customers refer others) -Loyalty program engagement decline If we lose even 20% deliverability on a list of 5,000 customers with an average order value of $75, we're leaving thousands on the table. A conservative total of $124k annually. So, we cleanse. This is the process: 1. Fire up your ESP (I use Klaviyo) 2. Filter out non-personal email addresses (e.g. anything starting with help@, hello@, contact@, support@ - you know the drill) 3. Place a strict rule to flag anyone who hasn’t bought anything 4. Put them into another segment, tracking their opens with an unsubscribe trigger TL;DR if they’ve not bought or opened anything for 180 days, they’re automatically kicked off the list. This is a very simple system that I use to protect the brands I work with from revenue lost from a decayed list.
