Why has Operational Technology (OT) become the primary target for cybercriminals? Attacks have evolved from personal computers to enterprises, and now to critical infrastructures. Reports from Dragos and Fortinet confirm an increasing attack surface for OT, with traditional IT attacks like ransomware now prevalent in OT environments. There was a significant increase in ransomware attacks from 2023 to 2024. Technological advancements and resources like AI have also made it easier for adversaries to exploit operational technologies.
