Fresh AI Updates for K-12 Education: January-March 2026 I'm excited to share a living resource that I'll be updating throughout the next few months: the K12 AI Updates January-March 2026 presentation. I'll be continuously adding new slides as AI developments unfold, focusing on updates that either directly impact K-12 education or that education leaders need to monitor for potential future implications. Google's Big Move at BETT While I'm not at BETT this year, Google certainly made their presence felt with some game-changing announcements yesterday (January 21st). Here are a few highlights that caught my attention: 🆓 Gemini in Workspace - Now FREE for Education - Perhaps the biggest news: premium AI features that previously required subscriptions are now available at no cost across Gmail, Docs, Forms, Slides, Sheets, and Vids for all Google Workspace for Education editions (Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus). This dramatically expands free AI access regardless of budget. 📚 Gemini Connects with Google Classroom - Gemini now collaborates directly with Google Classroom, using class context to draft assignments and summarize student progress. This saves hours on assignment creation and provides data-driven insights. 🎓 Free SAT Practice in Gemini - Full-length, no-cost practice SAT tests are now available in Gemini, grounded in Princeton Review content. This democratizes test prep with AI-powered identification of weaknesses and time management tracking. 🤖 Workspace Studio for Education - Create, manage, and share no-code AI agents to automate workflows across Gmail, Drive, Sheets, and third-party apps—now a core service in ALL Google Workspace for Education editions. Just Say NO to Forcing Google on NCDPI students and teachers. Its education tools sound good on paper/video — because they can spend time and money on marketing. Their true mission: make more money for Google’s parent company (Alphabet) which is the 4th member of the Wall Street $4 TRILLION club. Actually, Google’s influence raises SIGNIFICANT concerns regarding student learning, ethical practices, and the role of teachers … Long-Term Customer Pipeline Internal documents suggest that Google views its engagement with schools as a way to cultivate users of its products. This approach has sparked criticism from education experts who argue that it prioritizes CORPORATE OVER GENUINE educational outcomes. Critics contend that this strategy can lead to an overemphasis on technology in classrooms, potentially compromising the quality of education. Ethical and Privacy Concerns The integration of AI and other technologies in education raises ethical questions. Many teachers express concerns about the potential for biased algorithms and privacy breaches. The lack of clear guidelines on how to use these technologies responsibly can leave educators feeling unprepared to navigate the challenges they present.
This living resource is such a helpful way to track developments in AI for early grades. Pairing these tools with play‑based pedagogy ensures technology serves young learners rather than replacing the essential human interactions they need. Love it.
I admire the NCDPI work very much. I teach middle school in Colorado but am exploring how our own work on an AI committee at the district level can be informed by these sorts of forward-thinking frameworks. The updates are greatly appreciated!
Thank you, Vera, for creating this excellent resource!
