One Emerging Leaders Institute team aimed to make it easier to find those connections with Duke Tribe, a resource organized by interests that could help grad students and postdocs find their people. Learn more about their project in a recent blog post by Kathryn Blethen, PhD, Keyu Li, Ben Jammaine Ncube, and Maria Emilia Panzetta. In the current UK HE context, academic managers occupy a uniquely pressured position; caught between senior executive team decisions and the lived realities of academic teams. This "squeezed middle" role demands not only operational competence but also emotional intelligence, strategic clarity, and a deep commitment to values-led leadership. Led by our Senior Consultant Jennifer Tester, working with executive coach Tessa Harrison, GatenbySanderson's monthly online drop in to support and connect Heads of Academic Schools and Departments provides a space for the new and experienced leading in this squeezed middle to share experiences and support each other in this mission critical role. October's online drop in session explored the issue of trust. Here are some of the themes discussed and suggestions for reflection in this summary of October's discussion, as well as a link to register for November's online session: When: Wednesday 19 November Time: 13:00-13.45 Topic: Tackling challenging conversations https://lnkd.in/eQKQXynu #AcademicLeaders #UniversityHeads #AcademicDepartments #AcademicLeadership #GatenbySanderson

That’s a wrap on the 2025 Applied Research Center for Civility Conference, a collaboration between UC San Diego and NCRC. Throughout the past year, the Center for Civility has engaged with 70 leaders representing more than 55 institutions, from students and faculty to nonprofit partners and campus leaders. Each shared insights on how to equip the next generation with the skills to engage across differences, lead with empathy, and collaborate effectively in diverse environments. The conference brought together a national network committed to advancing civility in education and leadership. Together we explored what’s working, identified challenges, and co-created strategies to help students become changemakers in a complex and polarized society. . . . . . #ncrc #nationalconflictresolutioncenter #communicationskills #slaytheday #leadership #leaders #leadingtheway #inspiration #makeadifference #conference #build #nextgen #ucsandiego #tritons #research #studies Jennifer Mnookin Karina Shklyan, PhD Kelly Nielsen

Too many people approach adversity playing not to lose rather than playing to win, Brené Brown explained to Adam Grant during a recent The Wharton School event. "Playing not to lose is always losing," she said. During their conversation as part of the McNulty Leadership Program's Authors@Wharton series, Brown and Grant discussed the tension between protecting our egos and pursuing growth. When advising organizations, Brown shared that she focuses her questions to CEOs on the challenges that keep them up at night: "If you want to win, we're going to have to have these hard conversations." Younger employees, meanwhile, need to be ready to step out of their comfort zones in similar fashion. In offering advice to the University of Pennsylvania students in attendance, Brown recommended asking their future boss, "What do you need me to do to win?" and explaining how they can contribute to common goals. #OrganizationalBehavior #OrganizationalDynamics #OrganizationalPsychology #LeadershipSkills #CEO

𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻’𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲? Halla Tómasdóttir and Bryn Freedman make a brilliant case for a new era of institutional strategy, one that is not about traditional, top-down leadership models which no longer fit the demands of the ever-changing education landscape. Instead, they argue that empathy, collaboration and a shared sense of purpose are driving a new era of institutional success.
