So, what once sounded like science fiction turns out not to be so far-fetched after all! Starcloud, a space-tech startup backed by NVIDIA, in Nov last year, sent a satellite roughly the size of a small fridge into orbit. Inside it was an NVIDIA H100 GPU, about 100 times more powerful than anything previously tested in orbit. It became the first spacecraft to train an LLM (called NanoGPT), and it now runs a lightweight version of Google’s Gemini model (called Gemma) in space.
