Market shifts since MiCAR    At Paris Blockchain Week, I took a deep dive into the current state of institutional crypto adoption across Europe. 🎤    We’ve come a long way: From early pioneers in 2017 to universal banks beginning to integrate crypto services into their offerings in 2025, following the full implementation of MiCAR. Regulation is clearly driving the next phase of adoption.    The era of fragmented rules has ended. With legal certainty, financial institutions are finally equipped to engage with crypto at scale. While dynamics vary by market, the overall direction is clear: momentum is building across Europe.   Our latest survey across France, Germany, Italy, and Spain reinforces this trend. MiCAR is not only reshaping the regulatory landscape but also how retail clients perceive crypto - safer and more attractive - with more than one-third of investors indicating they are likely to reinvest over the next five years.    Financial institutions will need to respond. The report maps out what that orchestration looks like: 𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐑𝐓𝐆𝐒 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐃𝐋𝐓 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 — they can't move at different speeds. Settlement timing has to be atomic. 𝐀𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 — one failing leg breaks the whole chain. This is engineering-hard, not academic. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 — not one blockchain to rule them all. Multiple systems that can talk to each other reliably. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬 — the financial plumbing that actually moves value needs to be scriptable and deterministic. 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 — whoever controls the final settlement instruction controls the system. Can't be ambiguous in a distributed environment. The emphasis shifting toward orchestration and interoperability rather than a single network replacing everything. This paper makes one thing clear: Europe is no longer asking if DLT will reshape capital markets - it’s designing how it will happen. Official Link: https://lnkd.in/dvydAjZc The core idea is surprisingly pragmatic. Not a single “mega blockchain.” Not full decentralization chaos. Instead → a multi-chain, regulated architecture where different DLT networks interoperate, and financial institutions remain at the center. That’s the real shift. We’re moving toward: - interoperable asset ledgers - tokenized cash (central bank + commercial bank + stablecoins) - network-based settlement instead of centralized infrastructure But here’s the uncomfortable part: this model is much harder to execute than it sounds. Interoperability, liquidity fragmentation, regulatory alignment, and collateral frameworks, all become system-level problems, not product features. The paper also quietly kills one popular narrative: A single unified ledger is not the future. Too expensive, too rigid, and unlikely to scale globally. My takeaway: DLT in capital markets won’t look like crypto, and it won’t look like legacy finance either. It will be a hybrid system: regulated, modular, interoperable, and politically coordinated. And whoever solves interoperability + liquidity + compliance together will define the next financial infrastructure layer.
