🧬 When AI “evolves” biology in days — not eons They used to scoff: “AI isn’t true intelligence — it just memoriz­es and imitates.” But on January 16, 2025, a game-changing paper published in Science proved otherwise. On January 21, 2025, news outlets reported that an AI model, ESM3, had simulated ~500 million years of molecular evolution to design a brand-new fluorescent protein, esmGFP, which had never existed in nature. This isn’t mimicry. It’s creation. ✨ Why this matters — in real terms ESM3 was trained on 3.15 billion protein sequences, 236 million protein structures, and 539 million protein annotations — an enormous corpus of biological “experience.” The generated esmGFP is only ~58% similar to its closest known relative yet still functions (i.e. it glows) — a distance that, in nature, might require hundreds of millions of years of divergent evolution. evolutionaryscale. By compressing evolutionary timescales into compute cycles, AI is now capable of inventing novel biomolecules — not just discovering ones that already exist. 💡 What this teaches us about AI & innovation If we define intelligence as the ability to generate what never existed before, then ESM3 just raised the bar. This is creative, generative intelligence — not just prediction. It also flips the playbook on R&D: Fewer blind experiments More in silico hypothesis generation Faster iteration loops Ability to explore “far-out” design space that nature didn’t sample 🌱 A hopeful thought This is just the beginning. Celebrating 75 years of the Turing Test 🧠 “Can machines think?” In 1950, here at The University of Manchester, Alan Turing posed the question that would define a field. In his seminal paper Computing Machinery and Intelligence, considered one of the very first papers on AI, he introduced the Turing Test - a way to see if a machine could think like us. He imagined a future where computers would be so convincing, you couldn’t tell the difference between them and humans.
