May 1 in China is something else. The crowds. The movement. The buzz. Last year, I took a train from Guangzhou to Changsha. 🎫 All tickets were sold out. 🚄 The station was packed by 6am. 🚶♂️ I stood for 3 hours—no seats. In Changsha, I queued 45 minutes just for bubble tea. Yes, bubble tea. And I wasn’t even mad. It was all part of the experience. Another year, I crossed into Shenzhen. Customs was so full, I saw a woman cry from the stress. The energy? Unforgettable. But this year, I'm in Singapore for the elections. It's calmer here. Quieter. Almost strange. Meanwhile, China just welcomed over 1 million visitors using the new 240-hour visa-free policy for 58 countries. On top of that, hundreds of millions of locals are also traveling for the May 1 holiday. Hotels are full. Flights are packed. 📸 Everyone's posting reunion selfies and street food shots. For many Chinese, this isn't just a holiday. It's a freedom fest. A time to move, explore, live. Would I want to be there again? Maybe. I miss the energy, the madness, the stories. If you had 240 hours in China, Where would you go first?
Thomas H. when I first encountered 五一 in China many years ago, I almost "run" away 🤣 It was my first time "seeing" so many people in the same place and really like your video...so crowded! It was quite scary to me back then and I suddenly felt claustrophobic ... while you missed the action, now I avoid going China during this period 🤭
Your vivid recount of the energy and experiences in China truly brings the atmosphere to life, Thomas. It's a reminder of the vibrancy of travel and the unique stories that unfold when we embrace new cultures. Thank you for sharing such a compelling perspective!
240 hours in China sounds like a challenge and an adventure and I’d start with dumplings in Xi’an.
Thomas H., pretty wild how China handles those May crowds. Wonder how the new visa rules will shake up supply chains across Asia?
Wahh so many people!
It's a reminder of the vibrancy of travel and the unique stories that unfold when we embrace new cultures
