My favourite configuration for a classroom is a semi-circle. This way I can stand in the middle and look at each student. Students can all look at each other. I find that engagement goes up.

One of my classes is a 3-hour lecture… in a windowless hall. As soon as I walk in, I feel my soul being sucked out of my body. It is truly depressing. In contrast, my other classes are in bright, flat rooms with natural light and big windows — the difference in energy (for both me and the students) is night and day. I always feel a bit of pressure to compensate for the environment - to bring more energy, more movement, more life into the space.
