Content warning: This post discusses suicide and mental health. Roughly 40% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have mental health needs, but this serious issue is often overlooked and misunderstood. A Substack article I wrote about this topic, written by someone with disabilities https://mindinconstantmotion.substack.com/p/may-is-mental-health-awareness-month?r=5pj1c8
IDD = Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities... BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY... If you are having thoughts of suicide or have harmed yourself recently... Please call 988 (anywhere in USA) 24x7 hours every day... Compassionate Friendly people are there to talk to you NOW! Completely HIPPA confidential, all discussions.
40% is staggering and underreported. Mental health in the IDD community is too often overlooked. Thank you for surfacing this.
Wow
Thanks for posting Grant!
It looks like this link is broken. If you are able to fix it, I'd love to look at this data! Also, I think the caption and imagery in this post may be misleading. Is it meant to imply something along the lines of 40% of people with IDD have a mental health diagnosis, or, 40% of individuals with IDD seek treatment for their mental health? In my opinion, 100% of individuals with IDD have mental health needs - just as 100% of individuals without IDD have mental health needs.
