A team, including researchers from MIT NSE and EECS, developed a technique that enables real-time, 3D monitoring of corrosion, cracking, and other material failure processes inside a nuclear reactor environment. At this week's Atlantic Council Energy and Defense Summit, I discussed how military operations are more energy-intensive than ever and threats to energy supply are becoming more complex. Nuclear microreactors will quickly become a decisive factor in military readiness.   BWXT is leading the build and deployment of Project PELE, the first advanced transportable microreactor system in the United States. BWXT will deliver this system to the Idaho National Lab in 2027, load the fuel, and perform full-scale testing in 2028 – a pathfinder for the future of all advanced nuclear systems. The United States Department of War is making one of its most significant pushes yet into modern nuclear power. It's launching a program to put small reactors on US Army bases across much of the country where strained power grids can’t keep up with rising energy demands. On Tuesday, the Army unveiled the Janus Program, which aims to supply bases by 2028 with microreactors - tiny reactors generating less than 20 megawatts of electricity, generally enough to power a small town. 20MW is a fraction of the energy output that larger modern reactors can produce, but the microreactors are small enough to move on a containership or aircraft. #janus #usarmy #capitalparkpartners

Mini reactors: coming to a UK military base near you? "The Ministry of Defence will also investigate opportunities to leverage modular nuclear reactor technologies, both to meet direct energy needs and to prove its potential for wider use in support of the Government’s Clean Energy Superpower Mission" (page 69 of September's UK Defence Industrial Strategy, DIS). This sentence and a similar one later in the DIS underline the broader, potential application of all the exploratory work done recently in the UK on the utilisation of modular nuclear reactor technology. Time, resource, site suitability, regulatory reform (already in hand) will no doubt all determine how/how fast/if such technology sees service with the UK Armed Forces and Defence Estate. In the US, the Department of Army however launched the "Janus Program" earlier this month, to deliver resilient and secure energy, to support defence installations and critical missions.
