To avoid HR software disasters, here's what you need: The right questions. Most SMEs rush into new HR systems because they're frustrated with spreadsheets and manual admin. Fair enough. But without asking the right questions upfront, you'll end up with expensive software that nobody uses. Here are the three questions that matter: 1. What specific problems are we actually solving? "Better HR" isn't a problem. "Spending 6 hours a week chasing holiday requests" is. List your actual pain points. Be specific. This determines what features you need and what you can ignore. 2. Who will own this system day-to-day? Someone needs to be responsible for setup, maintenance, and helping colleagues when things go wrong. If you don't have this person identified and committed, your shiny new system will become another abandoned tool. 3. How will we measure success in 6 months? "Everyone's happier" isn't measurable. "Holiday requests processed in under 24 hours" is. Set clear metrics before you buy anything. This keeps you focused on outcomes, not features. Most companies skip these questions and wonder why their HR software feels like a waste of money. Ask them upfront, and you'll choose better and implement smarter.
