London’s Ankar raises $20 million in series A led by Atomico to scale AI patent platform London-based startup Ankar has raised $20 million in Series A funding to scale its AI-powered platform designed to manage the full patent lifecycle for enterprises and legal teams. The round was led by Atomico, with backing from Index Ventures, Norrsken VC and Daphni, bringing total funding to $24 million. The company plans to double its team and expand into the US market. Founded by former Palantir engineers, Ankar aims to replace fragmented patent workflows with a single end-to-end system, helping organisations improve productivity and take a more strategic approach to intellectual property. Imagine that a startup called ‘Pied Piper’ builds a new social media platform with a unique way of connecting users, something that’s gaining early traction. A dominant tech firm, sensing the long-term threat, acquires it. But instead of helping it grow, the platform is quietly shut down, and its best features are absorbed into the buyer’s existing service. At first, this may seem like a win for consumers, who can still enjoy the features, perhaps even more smoothly. But what’s lost is the chance for real competition. The startup might have grown into a strong rival, offering a different model, maybe with better privacy, fewer ads, or a healthier algorithm. Now, that alternative never sees the light of day. Here, Pied Piper’s acquisition is a nascent acquisition. I explore the complications and hurdles of nascent acquisitions, why the Indian competition regime is currently unequipped to deal with them due to jurisdictional and substantive pitfalls, and how this blindspot can be addressed, in my recent article published on DNLU Student Law Journal.
