Building a startup forces you to slow down and really understand the problem before rushing to launch. While developing SafeLink, I’ve been spending time speaking with freelancers and clients about how they currently handle payments, disputes, and expectations when working outside marketplaces. The stories are consistent, projects agreed in DMs, payments sent on trust, and problems when expectations aren’t clearly structured. Those conversations are shaping how we’re designing SafeLink. Still early, but every conversation is making the product sharper. If you’re a @freelancer or someone who hires freelancers directly, I’d love to hear how you currently handle payments and agreements. #freelancer

Wrote this to our community this week and wanted to share it here too. To the 237 freelancers who signed up before we gave them much in return, thank you. That backing means a lot. We've been heads down. Product testing, real feedback, first pilot business locked in. Getting the basics right before we open the doors properly. If you know a business that needs a hand — website design, social media, videography, marketing consulting — we've got the freelancers. Pilot program is just around the corner, send them through. And if you are interested in our journey check out Mikey's devlog below to see what's been happening under the hood. 👇 #freelancer #marketing #australia
Mikey's Devlog #2 is live 👀 237+ freelancers deep, a gig page taking shape, and two big pillars incoming — a project management system and milestone payments built into the platform. Michael's also having a little too much fun with Go microservices. Classic. Oh, and we've got our first pilot business locked in. A founder once told me, “We’ll go with a freelancer… It’s more budget-friendly.” Fair enough. 3 months later, they came back. Not to scale, but to fix everything. Their product was half-built. One freelancer had done the frontend. Another handled backend. A third worked on APIs. But nothing really worked together. No clear ownership. No structure. No one responsible for the final outcome. Just pieces… not a product. And that’s when it clicked for me: It’s not about freelancers vs teams. It’s about who owns the outcome. Because when there’s no ownership: You spend more time managing people than actually building your product. You keep explaining the same thing again and again. And slowly… momentum disappears. But when you work with an experienced team: There’s clarity. There’s structure. There’s accountability. Someone is not just coding, they’re thinking, planning, and building for scale. In Business Development, I’ve seen this pattern too often: Freelancers can help you start fast. But the right team helps you finish strong. So before choosing, ask yourself: Do I just need the tasks done…or do I need this built right? Building a product isn’t about saving money. It’s about not having to build it twice. What’s been your experience, freelancers or teams? #BusinessDevelopment #StartupLessons #Freelancers #TechTeams #ProductDevelopment #B2B #Entrepreneurs #Scaling #SoftwareDevelopment

The next great gig platform should not feel like another freelancer directory. It should feel like the AWS of production. That means scalable labor infrastructure for modern content operations: specialized roles overflow capacity localization editing subtitle workflows always-on production event-based production bursts rights-aware delivery systems That’s where this gets interesting. Because brands and studio-like teams do not just need talent. They need reliable, repeatable production capacity that can flex with demand. That is a software problem. That is an operations problem. That is a market design problem. And most people building gig apps are still thinking way too small. A list of freelancers is not infrastructure. Infrastructure is when the system helps work get scoped, staffed, reviewed, cleared, delivered, and paid out at scale. That’s the bar. Everything else is just another directory with nicer branding. Question: What would it take for a gig platform to stop being a marketplace and start being real infrastructure? #StartupIdeas #SaaSBuilder #TechTok #Entrepreneur #GigEconomy #SoftwareDevelopment #BuildSystems

A freelancer finished the project. Client said: “We will release payment after internal approval.” That approval never came. No contract. No payment clause. No leverage. This is how freelancers lose money. Not because of bad clients. Because nothing was written. Do you take advance before starting work? #contracts #freelancelife #contractmanagement #riskmanagement #legalinsights #freelancers #founders #project #clients #startup #VNLegal

Over the past few years, while working with many startups and growing businesses, I’ve noticed a very common pattern. Many founders prefer hiring freelancers instead of agencies — mostly because of pricing. At first glance, it feels like the smart choice. But after a few months, many of those same founders come back with the same problems: • The freelancer disappeared mid-project • The code quality was poor and hard to scale • No proper documentation or architecture • Delays with no accountability • Security concerns around business ideas and source code And the biggest issue — no strategic thinking. Most freelancers focus on delivering tasks. But a good agency focuses on building the right product for your business growth. When you work with the right technology partner, you get: ✔ A structured development process ✔ A full team (developers, designers, QA, architects) ✔ Long-term product thinking ✔ Better security for your code and IP ✔ Scalability planning from day one Yes, agencies may cost more upfront. But when you're building something that represents your business, brand, and future, the question shouldn't be “What is the cheapest option?” It should be: “Who can build this the right way?” As an agency founder, I’ve seen many startups rebuild their products after freelancer-led development failed. Sometimes the cheapest decision becomes the most expensive one. Curious to hear from other founders: Have you faced challenges working with freelancers vs agencies?

It was incredibly inspiring to write this profile on BIND, a business operations platform I truly wish existed when we first launched Lightning Media Partners. This is what entrepreneurship is all about: solving a real problem and making people’s lives (and businesses) easier. Colin and Brendan, thank you for sharing your story with CO— by U.S. Chamber of Commerce! PS: Freelancers, side hustlers, and new business owners, I highly recommend you check out BIND if you want to instantly look more professional to your clients: https://bindapp.com/
When Colin Normile and Brendan Normile realized that countless side‑hustlers were juggling contracts, invoices and client disputes with nothing more than Venmo and a notes app, they decided to change the game. That’s how BIND was born – a platform that gives freelancers and fledgling businesses a professional, end‑to‑end toolkit for agreements, billing and dispute protection. Explore how their journey reflects the realities of starting and scaling a modern small business: https://buff.ly/PdqAuAr #sidehustle #freelancers
