Boring Charts - Better Insights 💡 the episode of the Daten-WG podcast with Lonneke Opsteegh was truly amazing - starting with her unexpected career path as a PhD going into BI overnight - going to the science behind better visuals (and why charts actually shall look boring!) - through a spin-off into DISC personality types and why they matter to build better reports - we finally moved to a discussion if data can and shall ever be "neutral" - the good old storytelling vs. analytics debate Lonneke challenges the myth of objectivity in data: “Every chart is a message.” And she shows that creativity isn’t about wild visuals, but about finding smart, functional ways to help different users – with different personalities – understand the same data. ➡️ this episode is for everyone who creates dashboards or just likes data link in the comment!

Just listened to "Aligning Business and Data" on the Data Engineering Podcast. And I realized… I was doing it wrong. They describe data modeling as a socio-technical effort. It’s not just about schemas; it’s alignment and collaboration with business. Next time I will treat the model as a shared contract. Not a schema diagram hidden in a repo. Executives don’t care about your master data model, metadata strategy, or stewardship program. What do they care about? ✅ Brands. ✅ Customer relationships. ✅ Scale. As one of my podcast guests put it perfectly: “Start with what is important to the company. It’s in the annual report, the investor deck, or the last town hall. That’s the language your C-Suite speaks.” Too many data leaders lose their audience because they lead with technical jargon instead of business impact. If you want your message to land: 🔑 Anchor your story to company goals. 🔑 Translate “data quality” into “customer trust.” 🔑 Show how better data fuels growth, not just governance. 💡 Your role isn’t just managing data, it’s aligning insights to the outcomes that drive shareholder value. The bottom line? If you want that seat at the executive table, stop talking about data for data’s sake and start talking about business results. 🎥 Watch the full podcast: https://lnkd.in/gZiMKYGH 👇 Data leaders, how are you framing your work in terms your executives actually care about? #DataLeadership #CDAO #AnalyticsStrategy #DigitalTransformation #ExecutiveAlignment #StorytellingInData

can data be really neutral and objective? Lonneke Opsteegh says NO..! 😀 Who says we should be objective? We're trying to communicate something. If you are an expert you are allowed to have an opinion about the data That is why data storytelling and consistent presenation and standards are not a contradiction 💡 To highlight things and to offer guidance are means of communication and can be valuable. yes: it could be used as kind of misleading. Alexander Arvidsson has examples 😉 But the difference of misleading intepretations is not some kind of "neutral data" - it is still communication, but you shall be clear that it's your own opinion, your conclusion. ...as an analyst, you shouldn't just throw the data in a big fat table it would be objective but nobody understands. ➡️ whole episode from the Daten-WG podcast in the comment
