Mass Timber and CLT projects are changing the way we think about buildings. Around the world, architects and builders are embracing Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) as a structural solution that is both strong and sustainable. At @WholeForest, we love seeing this movement grow. CLT creates the structure of the building — the bones of a space. Our role is helping shape the experience inside those spaces. WholeForest products — including hardwood countertops, wall tiles, flooring, and custom surfaces — can complement CLT projects by adding warmth, texture, and natural tones to interiors. When materials like these come together, the result is powerful: 🌿 Structural systems that reduce carbon 🌿 Interior materials that connect people to nature 🌿 Spaces that feel warm, authentic, and timeless We’re always excited to connect with architects, designers, and builders working on mass timber and CLT projects. How are you seeing mass timber influence your projects?

The link between mass timber and sustainable interior surfaces is compelling. Over the course of any building's life, the amount of carbon needed to remodel the interior surfaces is often greater than that needed to construct the project in the first place!

Flat slabs look simple… but that simplicity hides serious structural challenges. 🏗️ A flat slab system transfers loads directly from the slab to the columns — no beams involved. This makes construction faster, ceilings cleaner, and interior layouts more flexible. But the engineering behind it is not as simple as it looks. Key advantages: • Faster construction cycle • Reduced floor height • Clean ceilings for services • Flexible interior layouts Key challenges: • Punching shear around columns • Deflection control over time • Limited span efficiency • Risk of progressive collapse if poorly detailed Flat slabs work best for moderate spans (around 6–9 m) where speed, simplicity, and architectural flexibility matter. ⚠️ The critical zone is always the column–slab connection. Poor detailing there has caused some of the most serious slab failures in reinforced concrete buildings. Good design makes it efficient. Poor design makes it dangerous. What do you think — are flat slabs always the best choice for modern buildings? In residential construction, ceilings are often treated as a blank surface. We see them differently. A thoughtfully designed wood ceiling can materially change the experience of a room. It can recalibrate scale, add warmth without visual heaviness, improve acoustic character, create stronger hierarchy within open-plan spaces, and establish a more resolved architectural language across the interior. What makes these ceiling treatments successful, however, is not the material alone. It is the level of technical discipline behind the execution. Done properly, wood ceiling systems require close coordination across design and construction: substrate preparation, moisture considerations, attachment strategy, board layout, reveal consistency, movement tolerance, lighting integration, and clean transitions at walls, beams, glazing pockets, and adjacent finishes. The finished result may feel effortless, but it depends on rigor. That intersection of architectural design and building science is where Eastwest Builders does its best work. We believe the strongest residential environments are not only beautiful, but deeply resolved—where every finish decision is supported by sound detailing, thoughtful sequencing, and disciplined construction. Wood ceilings are one example of how a single move can elevate both the visual and spatial quality of a home when it is designed well and built correctly. #EastWestBuilders #ArchitecturalDetail #WoodCeiling #LuxuryBuilder #CustomHomes #DesignBuild #InteriorArchitecture #BuildingScience #Materiality #ResidentialDesign #ModernHomes #Craftsmanship #CeilingDesign #HighEndRemodel #PacificNorthwestBuilder

Most people care about the paint. Smart builders care about the structure. The fancy finishes, the lighting, the interior design… that’s what people usually notice. But the real building happens long before that. The stage most people ignore is actually the stage that decides whether the house will last 5 years… or 50 years. Foundation. Columns. Beams. Slabs. No decoration. No paint. Just the raw skeleton of the building. This animation shows the part of construction that actually carries the entire house, the structural frame. Because once the structure is wrong, no amount of finishing can fix it. Builders, engineers, and architects know this truth. Would you rather spend more on finishes… or on a stronger structure? 👇 #Construction #StructuralEngineering #HomeBuilding #CivilEngineering #BuildingProcess #ConstructionIndustry #Engineering #Concrete #Architecture #Builders

Cover It Up, or Show It Off? Rethinking SIPs & OSB Interiors in New Zealand A standard practice when building with SIPs (structural insulated panels) is often straightforward: put the panels up, then cover them with plasterboard or another finishing layer. It’s tidy, it’s familiar, and it feels like the “done thing.” But overseas, architects are starting to celebrate SIP linings — often OSB (Oriented Strand Board) — instead of hiding them. The same material we usually think of as structural sheathing or bracing is now being used as a visible interior finish, giving homes texture, warmth, and character. In commercial interiors, flooring is often one of the largest surfaces in a building, yet it’s sometimes the last detail people think about. The reality is that the right timber flooring installation can completely transform how a space feels. From corporate offices to theatres and heritage buildings, flooring plays a critical role in both aesthetics and performance. What makes a successful flooring installation? ☑️Precise setting-out and preparation before installation begins ☑️ Careful coordination with lighting, services, and interior features ☑️High-quality timber materials suited to the environment ☑️Experienced installers who understand architectural intent ☑️Finishing that delivers durability as well as visual impact At the end of the day, flooring isn’t just a finish, it’s part of the building’s story. If you are an architect or contractor searching for impressive timber flooring, I would love to chat. #TimberFlooring #Joinery #ConstructionUK #CommercialInteriors #Craftsmanship #InteriorArchitecture #BannJoinery
