The Ozwater’26 conference kicks off this month—and our water team is counting down! We’re looking forward to connecting with industry colleagues and friends, recording podcasts, and chairing a few session streams. Our team will be sharing insights across a range of great sessions, exploring stormwater harvesting for climate adaptation, using live digital twins and dynamic modelling to optimise water and wastewater networks, and the development of balanced wastewater standards for New Zealand. Peatland drainage changes greenhouse gas emissions, but the response is more complex than we often assume. 📕 New #publication alert Modeling the impact of drainage on peatland CO2 and CH4 fluxes and its underlying drivers Liyang Liu, Philippe Ciais, Thu Hang Nguyen, Yi Xi, Chunjing Qiu, Elodie Salmon, Aram Kalhori, Dr., Guimbaud Christophe, Matthias Peichl, Joshua Ratcliffe, Koffi Dodji NOUMONVI, PhD, Xuefei Li This study, explores how peatland drainage affects greenhouse gas emissions, focusing on both CO2 and methane (CH4) fluxes across northern peatland sites. Using a land surface model combined with machine learning, the research investigates how different drainage intensities influence greenhouse gas dynamics over time. Key insights: • Drainage reduces methane emissions but weakens peatland CO2 uptake • Greenhouse gas responses differ strongly between sites • Vegetation, soil carbon, temperature, and water levels shape emissions • Moss dominated peatlands show lower sensitivity to drainage The findings highlight the complexity of peatland drainage impacts and the importance of considering site specific conditions when assessing restoration and climate mitigation pathways. 👏 Congratulations to all authors on this important contribution.

💧 Why does trust matter for #AlternativeWaterResources? Across Europe, regions are exploring solutions such as water reuse, rainwater harvesting, desalination and aquifer recharge to strengthen climate resilience. But technical feasibility alone is not enough. For these solutions to move from pilots to practice, they need public confidence, clear governance and meaningful stakeholder engagement. On 23 June, the AWR4Climate cluster, bringing together AWARD_HEU, RECREATE and MARCLAIMED EU, will host a joint online webinar on "Building trust in Alternative Water Resources." The session will explore how trust can be built in practice through: 🔹 real-life demonstration cases 🔹 political dialogue and governance processes 🔹 participatory tools, including serious games 🔹 practical lessons from different European territories Join us to discuss how Alternative Water Resources can become a trusted part of Europe's climate-resilient water future. #GRAP is meant to respond to pollution spikes, but can it also deliver more sustained improvements in air quality? Our latest blog explores why acting on #AQI alone often creates stop-start restrictions, while missing the emission sources driving #pollution in the first place. This #NewBlog by Mohammed Sahbaz Ahmed, Ph.D, Prince Sant, and Arpan Patra, PhD argues for a more predictable GRAP — one linked to hyperlocal monitoring, emission hotspots, and source-based forecasting to improve both air quality outcomes and public trust.
