Irish Whiskey Gains Ground in India's Premium Spirits Market

Global exports of French spirits plunged by 17.4% in value in 2025, marking the category’s third consecutive year in decline. According to Fédération des Exportateurs de Vins & Spiritueux de France (F.E.V.S.), global sales of French spirits fell to €3.7 billion (US$4.4bn) in 2025, while volumes dropped by 5.2% to 43.95 million nine-litre cases.

After India and the EU signed a #freetrade deal last week, Alexander Westgarth CEO of WineCap told this news how the move will boost the fine #wine market. With India's import tariffs at 150 per cent and wine consumption less than 1 per cent of alcohol consumption, Westgarth highlighted how a tariff cut to 20 per cent for premium wines will have a significant impact. This is a tough one and the road to make this happen in India is even tougher . Alternative investments as such being a very niche segment in our country’s finance ecosystem , this progress is ambitious. Under pooled investment programs , both SEBI in India and SEC in the US have made operative restrictions . However individual ownership remains free from such scrutiny . For a regulation heavy market , successes and learnings of unregulated whiskey cask investments are something to follow in this decade, in the Indian context
