Why "Dark" Sound Design is More Than Just a Low-Pass Filter. In my years engineering for artists like Nine Inch Nails, I learned that true cinematic tension lives in the "imperfections"—the inharmonic frequencies and granular shifts that tell a story. Our latest blog post deconstructs the Anatomy of Dark Synthesis, from spectral freezing to modular chaos. We’re sharing the professional workflow used to create factory content for the industry's biggest synths. Look at the attached visual: a system on the verge of digital collapse, or "cyber-psychosis." As audio professionals, producers, and sound designers in GameDev and Cinema, you know that sound isn't just background noise—it is the architecture of emotion and focus. Phase 29: Cyber-Psychosis is our masterclass in functional, heavy audio design. Engineered with ultra-low resonance and crushing cinematic midtempo, this track explores the practical limits of Neural Resonance Theory, demonstrating how physical structures in the brain and nervous system physically synchronize with complex musical rhythms. Whether you are designing procedural audio systems with MetaSounds in Unreal Engine 5 or mixing the soundscape for a dystopian sci-fi thriller, this is how you build mechanical weight and tension into your environment. Don't just make your audience listen. Make them feel the pressure. Most people here know me for the tech work. But there's another side of what I build — one that lives in sound, visuals, and film. I've been quietly putting it together under **Blacksky Labs** on YouTube. Music. Visual art. Short film. Experimental stuff that doesn't fit neatly into a category. Starting to share more of it here. Not to pivot — just to show a fuller picture of how I think. First drop coming soon. 👁️ 🎬 YouTube → Blacksky Labs

A unique technical challenge: a brand new sound system, custom-built from the ground up, designed solely for a vow of silence. Imagine the scenario: a stage, a pristine PA, and a performance that lasted only two minutes before it was over. This specific rig, intended for an artist like Marcel Marceau performing a vow of silence, never served another purpose. It's a striking example of how specialized solutions, while impressive, can have limited application. Sometimes the most tailored approaches are the most restrictive. #janlandy #soundbroker #AudioEngineering #EventProduction #TechnicalChallenges #SoundDesign #LiveSound #PerformanceArt

Reproducing a funk rock demo involves a thoughtful approach to recording and layering instruments. This process often includes meticulous attention to detail, from capturing each instrument's unique sound to harmonizing them into a cohesive track. Technical hurdles are inevitable, requiring problem-solving and adaptability to ensure the final product reflects the intended vision. The journey of crafting a demo highlights the synergy between creative intent and technical execution. #MusicProduction #FunkRock #AudioEngineering #StudioLife #DemoRecording

This is an initial R&D proof of concept of a collaboration between Pell Ensemble, handmadesound, and Thunkist - a spatial-sound, 360° film dance work that confronts the brutal industrial history of Magnitogorsk, echoing the human cost of labour through bodies, movement, and sound. The music is motion-activated. Using smartwatches on each of her wrists, Rebecca triggers the sounds in the piece and moves them around the surround sound space. For the actual performance of this piece, John will play woodwinds live, also manipulated by movement from a watch on his wrist. To give an idea of the surround sound, the audio is binaural, so best listened to with headphones. You can find a longer length normal version of this video here: https://lnkd.in/eyJsiWnw And there is also a fully immersive 360 version of that video (works best in the YouTube app on your phone) here: https://lnkd.in/epY6vPUH Movement choreographed and performed by Rebecca Evans - Pell Ensemble Music written and performed by John Biddulph - handmadesound @flowfal and spatial audio production by Simon East - Thunkist Thanks to Tom Bromley at Burnt Orchid for the use of his amazing workshop as the filming location #contemporarydance #experimentalmusic #spatialaudio #woodwind #flowfal #wearabletech #movement #abletonlive #envelop4live

I recently wrote a short piece about why u-he synths have remained such a staple in my scoring template over the years. I talk a bit about Zebra, Diva, and Repro and how they fit into modern film scoring workflows. If you work with hybrid orchestral scoring or synths in general, you might find it interesting. Real talk: You can have the best preamps in the world, but if the energy in the room is off, you’re just recording noise. In the lab with Kim Nain. We aren't just capturing vocals; we're capturing a frequency that the charts can't ignore. Technology is the facilitator, but the synergy is the OS. Capturing authentic expression requires a balance of high-tech precision and human connection. It’s about creating a space where an artist feels comfortable enough to be raw, while I make sure every nuance is preserved in high fidelity. The hardware handles the bits, but the synergy handles the hits. Great to have Kim Nain in the studio pushing the boundaries of vocal production. This is how we build the future of sound: one session at a time. #DaleVirgo #KimNain #MusicProduction #VocalProduction #StudioLife #AudioEngineering #Collaboration #HighTechHighSoul

Robinson’s Village in collaboration with Salomon Korea Grateful to be asked by Salomon to do a performance, sound design, and modelling for their ‘Outone’ release Filmed in Dartmoor, all of the audio in this video was made from bird sounds (through resonators, pitch shifted, and processed within granular synths). Also 95% of the sound design was done on location by capturing the bird sounds & bird callers, and processing them through my modular synth. Grammy-winning engineer Dave Clauss has built his reputation mixing Latin superstars like Shakira, Carlos Vives, and Maná. His work has earned him seven Grammy wins (including five Latin Grammys) and, most recently, a 2025 Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album for Shakira's "Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran." When mixing immersive audio for these projects, he relies on Seventh Heaven Professional and Cinematic Rooms Professional: "I use Seventh Heaven constantly on almost every source; the rooms and halls are simply unmatched in my opinion. Both Seventh Heaven and Cinematic Rooms have become essential in my Atmos workflow. Being able to take my stems and reverb sends then expand them into an immersive environment while perfectly preserving the original vibe and 'weight' of the mix is a game-changer." For engineers working in Atmos who seek reverb that preserves the emotional impact and sonic character of their stereo mixes, Seventh Heaven Professional and Cinematic Rooms Professional deliver the precision and depth needed for award-winning results. #CinematicRoomsProfessional #SeventhHeavenProfessional #LiquidSonics #ReverbPlugin

Keeping the breakdown rolling. Part 2 of our VFX for music video by Eminem ft. 50 Cent’s "Is This Love." After locking the character designs and assets, we had to build the world around them. This breakdown literally flies through our environment. Watch how we build the location from different assets, fill it up, and shape the composition. Then you can see how we assemble it from separate render layers, layer by layer, creating the final composited image from different render elements. It’s all about blending the elements to achieve that final, cohesive atmospheric look. How do you like the final comp? Drop your thoughts on the environment work in the comments below 👇 Directed By: Richard Selvi Production Company: Swiss Made Entertainment VFX studio: M1X Studio #vfxbreakdown #compositing #environmentdesign #cgworld
