This is a great example of what the current generation of AI-powered tools can do in the hands of a capable developer. While I by no means consider myself an expert on AI, my experience so far has been pretty simple: AI tools make everyone faster at what they do. If you're good at what you do, you can churn out 5-10x more great stuff. If you're bad at what you do, you can now finally produce bad work at scale.

It's been a while since I posted here, so I thought I'd share how I've been killing time lately: building simple solutions using AI – with zero coding knowledge! 🤓 Like everyone else, I've been buzzing about AI's potential. But talk is cheap, right? So, I challenged myself: could I build something useful using only AI in under 2 hours (talk about gamification! 🎮)? Here's the deal: armed with nothing but Perplexity, I set out to tackle a tiny problem faced by us internet addicts – distractions. (Endless scrolling, anyone?) Brainstorming with #perplexityAI was fun, we came up with a Chrome extension that's part obstacle course, part guilt trip. You feed it your usual time-wasting sites (yup, #instagram, #youtube, I'm looking at you 👀), and it throws up a roadblock when you try to visit them. But what if you want to waste time (or done with your productive window)? We've got that covered. A popup asks, "You're wasting time!" with two options: "I know" (go ahead, you rebel) or "Save me!" (closes the tab and brings you back to your productive work). Don't mind the text in the popup, though – this was a quick build, and I used the first words that popped into my head! 😅 I fully intended to polish them later, but like everyone else, I got a little too distracted... Now for the fun part: prompting Perplexity to write the code. After a few rounds of debugging, swearing (just a little 🤬), and head-scratching, we had a working product! 🎉 It's not the prettiest, but hey, it works! (See the screengrab below for a sneak peek.) One major roadblock? The extension kept blocking sites even after clicking "I know." 🤯 Turns out, there were issues with how the content script was injected, conflicts with website permissions, and problems restoring dynamic content. The fix? Instead of reloading the same tab, I had to program it to close the blocked tab, remove the site from the blacklist, and open a new tab to load it unblocked. Longer route but kinda works! I thought about publishing it, but Google wanted a small registration fee. 💸 I'll save that for when I have a few more extensions under my belt. 😉 Key takeaways? - AI can be a powerful tool for non-coders. - Constraints (like a 2-hour time limit) can spark creativity. - Don't be afraid to experiment and have fun with it! Even debugging can be an adventure! I had been working on two projects for a while. 1. ProdApp - the one-place platform where you can manage your technical writing with multiple platforms clubbed. You choose one platform as the parent and then write the content in it, and then the content is converted (by abiding with the constraints of the platforms - like twitter word limit etc) and will be posted their as soon as the content is posted in the parent platform. Future directions for ProdApp - addition of more AI functionality for image generation, content suggestion, managing premium versions to add more ease for the user 2. Offers workflows tailored for development teams. 🔹 Usage: Pricing for the Team Plan starts at $500/month. 🔹 Tech Stack: Claimed to use GPT-4. Still confirming details as I continue my research. I’m learning to code (with AI)! Since I started TCLA, I've long been constrained by my inability to code. This doesn’t just mean I can’t solve problems myself. More importantly, it means I have a limited perspective on what is possible to build. This is all about to change. Right now, my Twitter feed is filled with software engineers questioning the future of their work thanks to OpenAI’s upcoming o3. But, personally, there couldn’t be a better time for me to learn how to code because of how AI can help and answer questions along the way. I already find my default is to ask questions to ChatGPT rather than Google. What I want to develop is the foundational knowledge so I can build things, even if in practise we continue to hire developers for bigger projects. Long-term, it’s a bet that having this knowledge now will compound and that it’ll be a superpower to be like: ‘Oh I want this thing and I can build this in the way I want to’. This is the big downside to not building things myself. I find I can’t make things the way I want them which is limiting when our edge is having a deep understanding of the problem we’re trying to solve. And right now, it’s quite clear that we’re really early. Soon, pretty much everything about how we work is about to change. So there is an arbitrage to learning this stuff before it becomes mainstream. My goal is to build an MVP of our new commercial awareness platform for release on the 1st February 2025. I suspect having a concrete project will be the best way for me to learn. I hope to share my journey here along the way (good for accountability). For context on what I’m using right now: I’m currently using Cursor AI with Claude 3.5 Sonnet. I’ll build the first version of the app using Python. I am then using ChatGPT to ask questions when I get stuck. I’ll share my journey here along the way. AI is changing the game, fast. Three years ago, I stepped away from coding. Recently, one of my teams was working on a tool that needed LinkedIn integration, and I got curious. With the help of AI (shoutout to ChatGPT), I decided to give it a shot myself. After just 6-8 hours of effort, I built a React + Next.js app that seamlessly integrates with LinkedIn. Now, does AI help you build something production-ready right away? Not exactly. But it gives you the direction and saves you a lot of time—time that can be spent wisely refining and optimizing your work. If you're an engineer taking weeks to code something simple, take note—AI is here, and it's reshaping how we work. Adapt or get left behind.

Having lots of "likes" and "followers" isn't as important as it used to be. Take my recent experience with Facebook. All of a sudden I'm flooded with AI-related Reels. Not surprising considering what I've been looking at these days. Who's noticing my behavior? You got it—AI. This isn't suprising because Meta has repeatedly said it's switching from a "follow/like" algothrim to an AI-generated algorithm. Guess it's definitely happening. So, should we continue to go after more likes and followers? Of course, but those who also figure out how these AI algorithms work will get their stuff in front of their intended customers better, while everyone else will just have a bunch of followers they may not be reaching.
