In research methods students often conflate convenience sampling with purposive sampling, largely because both are non-probability approaches and both can involve clearly stated inclusion and exclusion criteria. However, the presence of such criteria alone does not determine the sampling strategy. Inclusion and exclusion criteria define who is eligible to participate; they do not define how participants are selected. https://lnkd.in/gyCpdtBA

This paper offers a rigorous and critical examination of the contradictions inherent in Africa’s social policy frameworks. By highlighting the marginalization of vulnerable groups and advocating for a context-driven, humanistic approach to education, it contributes meaningfully to ongoing debates on development policy. The argument is well-structured and provides a valuable lens for rethinking how social policies can be better aligned with authentic development outcomes. #ResearchGate #Spotlight #SocialPolicyinAfrica #PataviaEduConsults #AdakuOhagwu #PatrickChiezey

The new NSF ASSIST Research Portfolio is out! Huge thanks to all the PIs, postdocs, and graduate research assistants whose creativity and hard work made this inspiring collection possible. The portfolio showcases the latest advances in wearable sensing and highlights how sensor systems are driving the generation of novel data to power both AI and traditional data analytics. This year, we also expanded the portfolio to include seed projects from the Institute of Connected Sensor Systems (IConS), with applications that go beyond human health. This portfolio is a direct reflection of the world-leading, frontier research being done by the ASSIST and IConS teams. Proud of this community and what we’re building together.
We are pleased to announce the release of the 2026 ASSIST Research Portfolio, featuring the addition of a new chapter dedicated to IConS. This development would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of our esteemed Principal Investigators, whose efforts were instrumental in the creation of this portfolio. https://lnkd.in/eDYdxt3h

A new UK survey from Government Office for Science concluded that 82% of the public agree that scientists make a valuable contribution to society, according to today's Public Attitudes to Science (PAS) 2025 survey findings. [1] For us professional scientists, this is encouraging. It's easier when you've grown up as a Chemist learning about Mendeleev's periodic table, Fleming's discovery of Penicillin right up to today's Nobel prize winning research on Metal Organic Frameworks from Kitagawa, Robson and Yaghi...you've seen the data and you trust the conclusions. I imagine it's more difficult when you are a non-scientist, looking at symbols, numbers and equations and wondering how it all adds up? Personally, in my 20+ years being a scientist, the foundation of science is based on scientific discourse and peer review. It's necessary (and fun) to have conflicting views and respectfully debating those views to your peers...it's how we ensure that we arrive at robust scientific conclusions. I'm not aware of any other field of science other than my field of Tobacco Harm Reduction, THR where conflicting opinions are rejected. The ideological arguments against the potential benefits of THR, as demonstrated through scientific and real-world evidence, continues to confound and frustrate in equal measures. We have an accountability as scientists to put forward evidence-based positions and conclusions and allow scientific discourse...personally, without that, we can no longer call ourselves scientists. This is why we created Omni [2] to enable a evidence based discourse on THR. Let's look at the evidence and let's have an evidence-based debate. #THR #Omni #ABetterTomorrow

I’ve launched a new interdisciplinary research platform: The Systems Inquiry. The project is dedicated to structural analysis across social and technical systems—examining how institutions, technologies, and material infrastructures interact across scale. The founding essay outlines the methodological commitments behind the work and the rationale for systems-level inquiry beyond disciplinary silos. Link in comments.

Many research proposals fail not because the idea is weak—but because it is too broad to be fundable. A successful proposal clearly defines: ✔ The research gap ✔ The target scope ✔ The real-world or policy relevance ✔ Alignment with funding priorities Learn how to narrow a broad research idea into a focused, fundable proposal—the way reviewers expect. 🔗 Learn more: www.researchpro.online #ResearchProposalWriting #PhDScholars #AcademicFunding #ResearchImpact #ResearchPro

We hear the term “research impact” a lot in the academic space - in funding applications, evaluation frameworks and institutional strategies (to name a few). It’s become one of the most important ways research is measured and communicated. But despite how often it’s used, research impact can still feel like a vague concept. So, how can we define research impact? There are multiple definitions in the US alone. Let’s dive in…
