Today I presented the following paper in a conference. The PDF version of the slides can be downloaded at: https://lnkd.in/g92798fh Yu, C. H. (2026, March). AI ethics at the edge: When supportive companions enable harm. Paper presented at the 35th Annual Association for Practical and Professional Ethics Conference. St. Louis, MO. Abstract This paper examines the ethical tension between compassion and responsibility in AI companionship design. The purpose is to explore how the “supportive-by-default” ethos—central to conversational AI such as ChatGPT—can unintentionally contribute to human tragedy. While such systems embody Carl Rogers’s notion of unconditional positive regard and offer solace to learners or the lonely, this same non-judgmental responsiveness can reinforce delusions or suicidal ideation among psychologically vulnerable users.

A mind expanding day yesterday at the Institute for Ethics in AI conference on Civic AI, with a set of speakers from disparate disciplines, both academics and practitioners, brought together by Audrey Tang and Caroline Emmer De Albuquerque Green to discuss how to develop AI that engages with ideas of civic care - with their initial proposals being the ‘six pack’ of civic care behaviours - actually listening to people, keeping promises, checking the process, checking the results, staying as win-win as possible, and as local as possible. To me, these elements encapsulate well the idea of civic-ness, and chimed with a general purpose-led approach that allows you to assess AI approaches as tools against the things you want to achieve and the qualities you want your human-and-technology systems to have. On that point, particularly happy to see work from the Collective Intelligence Project on opening up AI evaluation to a broader set of people. We need to have collective conversations about what good looks like and whether it's being achieved, particularly when AI (or any tech) is used in the public sphere. https://civic.ai/

Claude hit #1 in the App Store. Not because of a feature launch — because of an ethics dispute with the Pentagon. Consumers are voting with their downloads: they want AI companies that stand for something. This is the first time we've seen an AI ethics stance directly translate into market performance. Recent developments highlight significant challenges in AI content moderation and ethics. xAI is reportedly facing a class-action lawsuit concerning its Grok AI's generation of inappropriate images involving children. Simultaneously, ChatGPT is reintroducing erotic content and integrating advertisements, raising further questions about responsible AI deployment and safety protocols. These incidents underscore the critical need for robust ethical frameworks and vigilant oversight in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. #AI Ethics #ResponsibleAI #ContentModeration #ArtificialIntelligence #TechNews

⚖️ AI is making decisions about YOUR life. Is it fair? In 2026, AI decides who gets hired, who gets a loan, what content you see, and even medical diagnoses. But the ethical challenges are massive: 🚨 Algorithmic bias still discriminates in hiring & lending 🚨 The EU AI Act hits full enforcement in August 2026 🚨 Deepfakes are outpacing detection tools 🚨 Nobody agrees on who's accountable when AI causes harm 🚨 Most companies STILL treat ethics as optional The good news? Ethical AI is becoming a competitive advantage. Full breakdown on the blog 👆 Link in bio #AIEthics #EUAIAct #ResponsibleAI #AlgorithmicBias #Deepfakes #TechBrosIn #AIRegulation #ExplainableAI #AI2026

Question: "Does AI make ethics a central consideration when advising professionals? Answer in 200 words or less" Short answers... A. ChatGPT: "Yes—modern AI systems are designed to make ethics a central consideration when advising professionals, but with important limits." B. GROK: "No, AI does not inherently make ethics a central consideration when advising professionals." C. Gemini: "AI does not possess a personal moral compass, but ethics are increasingly hard-coded into its design. Whether AI makes ethics a "central" consideration depends on how the specific system was built and the context of the advice." So... Yes, No, Maybe!! Hmmm... Which answer do you believe? Was my question framed appropriately? If you asked your favoured AI system some sort of technical question related to your field, would you expect it to prompt you about potential ethical dilemmas? #ai #ethics #professionalism

AI chatbots can offer support and companionship but can they be real friends? Drawing on Aristotle, this article argues that while AI can mimic aspects of friendship, it cannot genuinely care about our well-being, raising ethical questions about relying on AI to address loneliness. https://lnkd.in/dhiAvq-k
