Most people don’t struggle in their careers because they lack talent. They struggle because they lack visibility. This week, I had the privilege of speaking at Northeastern University at their "Spring 2026 Industry Leader Speaker Series", about something I deeply care about, Cybersecurity Careers. And here’s the truth I shared with them: When I was graduating, I didn’t even know cybersecurity was a real, viable, powerful career path. No one explained: • How broad the field really is • How you can pivot into it • How valuable security thinking becomes in every industry • How resilient it is — especially in uncertain markets Right now, students are navigating one of the most unpredictable job markets in recent years. Layoffs. Hiring freezes. AI disruption. Noise everywhere. In times like this, clarity becomes leverage. Cybersecurity isn’t just “another tech job.” It sits at the intersection of business risk, engineering depth, and strategic decision-making. Organizations can pause product launches. They can slow hiring. They cannot ignore security. What made this session even more meaningful was the feedback. The engagement was thoughtful. The questions were sharp. And the energy in the room was incredible. It was reassuring to see so many students curious, proactive, and willing to explore a path that isn’t always visible during graduation. If even one student walked away realizing, “There’s a path here for me”, then it was worth it. To everyone navigating uncertainty right now — especially students: You don’t need perfect timing. You need informed direction. And sometimes, exposure changes everything. Not all of my experience made it to my resume. Let’s talk about it. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned didn’t come from titles. They came from watching bad leadership fail in real time. I’ve sat in rooms. I’ve seen decisions made from ego instead of data. From power instead of purpose. From comfort instead of courage. And here’s the truth most professionals won’t say publicly: Many strong candidates intentionally OMIT experiences when applying for 9-5 roles. Why? Because they’ve seen what happens when complacent, power-hungry leadership feels threatened. Bad leaders: Don’t train. Don’t upskill. Don’t modernize. Don’t translate technical risk into business risk. Don’t understand AI governance. And absolutely don’t build the next generation. They protect their seats instead of protecting the enterprise. Meanwhile… In cybersecurity, the youth are being shut out. By archaic requirements. By toxic gatekeeping. By “years of experience” metrics that mean less and less in an AI-accelerated world. Let’s be honest. The same generation being ignored is the generation: Writing the exploit code Running ransomware operations Breaking infrastructure Learning faster than legacy leadership can adapt Yet we question whether they’re “ready”? The cybersecurity talent pipeline has a structural problem, and it starts at the entry level. A recent SC Media perspective makes it clear: while approximately 500,000 mid-to-senior cybersecurity roles remain unfilled in the U.S., there is actually a surplus of entry-level candidates who cannot find work. 5 Hard Truths About the Cybersecurity Job Market Nobody Talks About I have been watching this market closely for years, and I have lived it. Here is a real world example. Someone I know very well had no cyber background. No certifications. No college degree. No master’s coursework. What he did have was seventeen years of leadership experience in the Army. Within a few years of getting out, he landed not one, but three or four remote six figure program manager roles. Not because he had technical depth. Not because he checked every requirement. But because he knew someone already inside. This is not to diminish his service or leadership. It is perspective. Because on my end, I pursued the education. Earned the master’s degree. Invested in certifications. Put in hands on practice. Led small teams and large teams. Operated in high risk environments. Built entrepreneurial ventures on the side. Continuously invested in personal growth. And yet, like many of you, I still find myself navigating a market that often says one thing and does another. Here are the hard truths I have observed: 1. Qualifications do not always equal opportunity. 2. Job descriptions often represent ideals, not reality. 3. Access and relationships can outweigh credentials. 4. Hundreds of applicants does not mean hundreds are qualified. 5. There are no guarantees, even when you do everything “right.” You see postings with extensive requirements. Degrees. Certifications. Years of experience. Then you see those same postings recycled weeks later. Or roles quietly filled through internal networks. So the real question becomes this. Do you keep stacking credentials? Do you keep revising your résumé? Do you keep applying into a saturated pipeline? For me, the answer is simpler. Plan. Execute. Keep building. Keep sharpening your edge. Keep creating options that do not rely solely on someone else’s hiring decision. Because being qualified is important. But building leverage is essential. At this stage in my career, I am focused on what I can control. Growth. Discipline. Execution. Rethinking “Stepping-Stone” Roles A stepping-stone role is a job you take to gain experience, skills, exposure, or connections that help move you toward your long-term career goal, even if the role itself isn’t your final destination.It’s part of the progression, not the end point. If I’m honest, I used to feel quite hesitant about them. Earlier in my career, I experienced burnout from being thrown into situations without a clear roadmap or much support. That experience stayed with me. It made me more cautious about my next moves, and I noticed I started asking a lot of questions before stepping into something new. Part of that was curiosity… but a lot of it was fear of ending up back in that same space again. For a long time, I thought that hesitation meant I lacked confidence. Now I’m starting to see it differently. As I continue my transition into tech and explore opportunities in cybersecurity, I’m realising that careers rarely move in straight lines. Not every role has to be the “perfect” role. Sometimes it’s the role that helps you learn something new, build confidence, or get closer to where you want to be. That’s what a stepping stone really is. Not settling. Just building forward, one step at a time. I’m still learning to trust the process. Some days feel exciting, others feel uncertain. But I’m choosing to stay curious, keep learning, and allow the journey to unfold. Because sometimes the step doesn't look like the destination… is exactly what gets you there. When an Unexpected Door Opens… 🚪 You Learn Something New! Not everything valuable in our careers goes in your resume. Sometimes, it comes from unexpected conversations or unplanned opportunities. Recently, I experienced one such moment! 🔦 I was approached for a leadership role in #CyberSecurity. On paper, it didn’t align with my journey - My experience has been in #BusinessDevelopment & #Sales across #Defence, #Aerospace, #MedTech, #Telecom and #Industrial with #TechnologyLedSolutions. Cyber security? Not my core domain. Yet, someone showed trust in my ability to make that shift. And that trust meant a lot. Gratitude 🙏 To the person who trust in my capability. And to the leaders who took the time to interact, evaluate and share perspectives during the process—thank you for the conversations and the learning. I truly value it. Exploring Something New 🔍 I decided to give it an honest shot. I spent time understanding basics - #SecureAccessWorkspaces / #IdentityAndAccessManagement / #ZeroTrustArchitecture / #EndPointSecurity / Criticality of cyber resilience for defence & national infrastructure - AND how my experience could fit within the scope. But during this journey and in discussion with stakeholders, I realised- ➡️ At this stage, a full transition would be a big leap, given the learning curve and enterprise ecosystem access required in cyber security. Career Transitions — Timing Matters ⏳ Professionals in their mid-30s to early-40s can make this transition faster. At later stages, it’s still possible—but it needs deep re-learning, time and ecosystem rebuilding where hiring organisations have bigger concerns - an honest reality! Yet, I’m glad I explored it because it expanded my thinking and exposed me to a critical domain I would have otherwise ignored. I now understand cyber security better than ever and this understanding will continue to shape how I engage with customers and partners. Where I Continue to Focus 🎯 This experience reaffirmed where I create the most value: 👉 Business Development & Sales 👉 Defence | Aerospace | MedTech | Industrial Automation 👉 Technology programs & HMLV solutions (EMS included) 👉 Strategic partnerships & complex market access This is where my experience, network and passion strongly align. My Takeaway 💡 Careers don’t always grow in straight lines. Sometimes, growth comes from exploring what feels unfamiliar. I have somehow experienced this throughout my career - New Markets / New products / New Technologies! You may not, sometimes, make the shift…but you will always gain perspective, learning and clarity.
