Investors are told to ask lots of questions. Here are 22 questions that founders can ask back! This is a great resource, thanks to Christie Jenkins and Techstars Tech Central Sydney Accelerator 🤩
VCs ask founders dozens of questions. Make sure you ask dozens back. Taking money from an investor is like getting married. Once you sign the papers it is a lengthy process to get divorced! Don’t forget you are interviewing them too. IMPORTANT: If you can find the information on the internet, do not ask the question. Be well researched. Questions for the fund: 💸 What is your fund size? 💸 Are you currently deploying capital? How far through your fund deployment are you? 💸 What is your typical check size? 💸 Do you lead, co-lead, or follow? 💸 Do you follow on? At which stages? What proportion of your fund is reserved for follow-on investments? 💸 What is your expected return horizon and typical holding period for investments? 💸 How involved do you want to be post-investment in terms of board seats, decision-making, etc. 💸 What value do you bring beyond funding eg. mentorship, network, strategic partners, hiring support etc? 💸 What does onboarding looks like post-investment. For the specific investor: 👩💻 Can you share a success story from your portfolio? What was your role in that success? 👩💻 Can you share a failure from your portfolio? What was your role and what did you learn? 👩💻 How do you personally like to work with founders post-investment? 👩💻 How do you prefer to communicate and receive updates from founders? 👩💻 How do you act when things are not going well? Can you give examples? 👩💻 What do you do when you disagree with a founder? Questions about your specific company: 🚀 What most excites you about our company? 🚀 When you look at our product roadmap, what else are you excited by that we haven't mentioned yet? 🚀 If you decide not to do this investment, what would be the key reason? 🚀 What do you believe is the future of [your industry / technology]? 🚀 What strategies have you seen work exceptionally well for other portfolio companies that you would recommend for us? For other founders in their portfolio (always do reference checks): 🌶️ What did the fund promise but never followed through on? 🌶️ If an investor is on your board, do they prepare, add value, and set aside their fund interests to prioritise the company? 👉 BONUS reason to ask these: You change the power dynamic. Whoever asks the questions has the most power. This makes you seem more high value (and more investible) than most founders who wait until they are given the opportunity in the last three minutes of a meeting to ask a question. 👇 Which of these is your go-to question? What have I missed? _____________ ♻️ Repost to help another founder 💚 Follow Christie Jenkins for more
