New research out this week shows there's a clear split in the way students use AI. And it has everything to do with confidence and guidance. 🧠 A University of Southern California study of 1,000+ students found two distinct patterns: 1️⃣ Instrumental help-seeking - using AI to learn, clarify & explore ideas. 2️⃣ Executive help-seeking - using AI for fast, low-effort solutions. Students with higher academic confidence and stronger digital literacy use AI to think deeply. Those who avoid peer interaction or over-trust AI are twice as likely to rely on it for quick answers. And when professors model thoughtful AI use, students shift toward learning-oriented behaviours. 💡 Takeaway Faculty influence on the one hand, and student confidence & digital skills on the other, determine whether AI becomes a thinking partner or a thinking replacement. Let's be honest: kids' learning styles are evolving faster than schools can adapt. And we're watching youth become increasingly reliant on AI—84% of US high schoolers, 73% of Canadian students using it for schoolwork. That's not going away. But the problem is, we're not teaching them the difference between AI as a *tool* and AI as a *crutch*. Between being in the driver's seat of their own learning versus becoming passengers in their own lives. The Stats: - Attention spans collapsing (6-8 seconds on content vs. 28-48 minutes in classrooms) - Literacy and math proficiency shifting across both countries - 75% of students see gains with personalized AI platforms—but what about critical thinking? The Question We're Avoiding: How do we teach students to *use* AI as a co-pilot, not let it fly the plane? To think critically about when to use it, when to struggle through problems themselves, and what it means to outsource your own reasoning? What Needs to Happen: Stop treating AI as a bolt-on solution. Redesign curricula so students learn *when* and *why* to use AI—not just how. Teach them the limitations, the biases, and the moments where human judgment matters more. Make them skeptical users, not dependent ones. The goal isn't to reject AI in education. I'm still thinking about a conversation I had recently with a group of high school students. Through the AI Tinkery at Stanford Accelerator for Learning, some fellow mentors and I had the opportunity to hear from the "Bridging Perspectives" club at Seoul International School (high five Kazunori Fukuhara Jenny Chen). They’ve been researching issues around AI in education and were looking for feedback on their presentations. It was a really fun, energizing conversation, and the topics they chose showed they're asking good, critical questions. ❇️ The risk of students not gaining needed skills. ❇️ The potential harm from AI hallucinations. ❇️ A national controversy over digital textbooks using AI. ❇️ Their hopes for using AI to support learning along with concern that their school and teachers aren’t ready to guide them. The discussion was so much richer than the typical narrative of 'students just use AI to cheat”. What I saw was a group of curious and concerned students who are ready to engage with the messy questions that AI in education presents. It left me wishing for more stories about AI in education that include student voices. A high school student's comment stopped me in my tracks: "There should be consequences for using AI." But the 'who' was the surprising part. Not students. Teachers. When we dug deeper, it wasn't a call to ban technology. It was a plea for trust. This student voiced a powerful sentiment: they feel "cheated" when they sense their teachers are outsourcing the core elements of their job, like personalised feedback or thoughtful lesson planning, to a machine. The problem isn't the AI. The problem is the perceived lack of human effort. And let me tell you, I heard anger in that student’s voice. It’s conversations like this with propelled Dr Nick Jackson, Amy Wallace and I to write The Next Word: AI & Learners. (Out later this year) This conversation exposed a major blind spot in our national discussion on AI in education. We are so focused on academic integrity and productivity that we've forgotten to check in with the students. We know the context is different for teachers (as workers) and students (as learners), but have we articulated it? (The image is one way to think about it). - What are their expectations for transparency? - What does a "fair" use of AI by a teacher look like to them? - How do we build new norms of practice that include their perspective? If students feel the relationship of trust and effort is broken, AI simply becomes a tool that scales that disconnect. If students feel included, that they have voice and agency, we might maintain and even build trust in a few way. We cannot successfully navigate this transition without bringing students to the table. It's time to ask them. What will be your first question? #ai #education

The new arrival was good enough to stay asleep long enough for me to have a coffee and read the Department of Education and Youth's new "Guidance on Artificial Intelligence in Schools", and I HAVE THOUGHTS, to put it mildly. I'll do a proper overview for schools over the coming week or two, but some initial reactions: The Good: it's a decent generic overview of what AI is and how an organisation might look at implementing it. There's plenty about compliance, which is obviously very important, and it addresses a lot of the most important potential pitfalls which I've been highlighting to schools. But! There's a massive elephant, in the room and almost entirely absent from the report, and that's around student use of AI. It gets barely more than half a dozen lines, most of which refer the reader to the (completely inadequate) guidance from the SEC around AI use in coursework. Teachers using AI to improve planning is fine. Administrators using it to streamline administration is fine. We should be all for those things. But students are already using AI, and it has the potential to ruin our education system if we don't adapt to it. It also has the potential to revolutionise our education system if we get it right. This is, I'm sure, the first report of many on this topic, but by largely ignoring student use of AI systems it misses the most important element of the whole debate by far. What if personalized learning isn't about AI giving students custom answers, but about AI asking them custom questions? We have a significant literacy challenge. In Ontario, for example, nearly 1/3 of Grade 3 students aren't meeting the provincial reading standard. Simply using AI as an "answer engine" won't fix this. It will destroy the critical thinking we need. But the research points to a different model. New studies show LLMs can act as Socratic partners, posing reflective, open-ended questions that deepen student thinking (Jabbour et al., 2025). At Secondary AI we are exploring how to use AI as a "nonjudgmental mirror". Imagine an AI that analyzes a student's freewrite and, instead of correcting it, asks: "I noticed you mentioned 'freedom' and 'responsibility' frequently. How do you see those two ideas connecting?". This is the personalization that scales: not just custom content, but custom reflection. It's a model that honors the student's own cognitive work and builds the metacognitive skills they desperately need. How should we be measuring the success of AI in the classroom—by the quality of its answers, or the quality of the student thinking it provokes? AI literacy and computational thinking are two sides of almost the same coin. Both help students help students think with technology. When students learn how AI works, they begin to see patterns, break down problems, and design solutions step by step. That’s computational thinking in action. Decomposition, abstraction, algorithmic thinking, and evaluation have become part of how learners interact with digital tools every day. For us teachers and educators, the link between AI literacy and computational thinking opens space for authentic learning. When students explore how chatbots reason, how algorithms make predictions, or why certain outputs go wrong, they aren’t just learning about AI, they’re learning how to think critically, logically, and creatively. ISTE describes computational thinking as the ability to solve problems using concepts from computer science that apply across disciplines. In other words, computational thinking is for anyone trying to understand the digital systems shaping our world.
