I’m sharing insights from a recent conversation about the true costs of data acquisition. What matters most isn’t just the number of websites or the sheer volume of records—it's the quality, access, and compliance that drive value and risk. - Quality over quantity: clean, relevant data saves time and improves decision-making. - Access and latency: where data comes from and how quickly you can use it. - Licensing and usage rights: ensure you’re compliant and scalable. - Maintenance and updates: ongoing costs to keep data fresh and reliable. If you’re evaluating data acquisition, think beyond price tags and map the total cost of ownership. How do you factor these elements into your data partnerships, and what hidden costs have you uncovered? You don't always need new tools to prove your value. You might just need to ask better questions of your partners. I was talking to a consultant who struggled to show ROI to his clients. He felt like he was flying blind. We realized a partner he already works with has all the analytics he was looking for. Sometimes, your "expert" status isn't about having all the data—it's about knowing where the data lives and being bold enough to request access to it. If you're a service provider, bake "Read-only Analytics Access" into your contracts. You can't improve what you don't measure.

If your analytics platforms disagree, your decisions will too. One system shows strong results. Another tells a different story. Same business. Different numbers. Now someone has to step in and manually check the data. Comparing purchases. Validating transactions. Checking campaign data. Trying to reconcile what should already be clear. The issue isn’t the report but the way the system was put together. Data coming from different places. Tracked in different ways. Something is off, but where? When your data needs constant verification, it stops supporting decisions and starts slowing them down. You end up working for a system that’s meant to do the work for you, and that’s not good for business. If your data needs constant validation, your setup likely needs attention.
