Episode 017 of The Blueprint Schools Podcast, “Student Assessment: The Shift from Confusion to Clarity” continues Season 2’s exploration of The Shift, the essential changes Christian schools must make to thrive in today’s evolving educational landscape. In this episode, host Dana Kirchoff, founder of Blueprint Schools, is joined by lead consultant Ryan Kirchoff to examine one of the most transformative changes a school can make for student learning: rethinking grading. Together, they unpack how schools can shift toward assessment practices that promote clarity, growth, and genuine student understanding. Ryan shares his own journey of transformation—from grading everything to focusing only on evidence of learning—and offers practical steps any teacher or school leader can take to begin making this shift. The conversation challenges long-held assumptions about grades and invites educators to see assessment not as an endpoint, but as an ongoing dialogue that helps every student grow. We are so focused on data outside of the classroom that we are missing the critical data that is happening right in front of us. Right? So there's a moment in the classroom where students, they go from being on the verge of struggling to actually struggling. And because we are looking at so much benchmark data and after the fact data, we're missing the real time data where we can intervene early and prevent struggling from happening in the first place, rather than waiting for kids to struggle, finding out about it two weeks later when we look at our pretty data charts and then trying to intervene at that point. Teachers understand Tier 1 in theory, but they struggle to translate it into their own classrooms, anticipate where students will stumble, and respond to the real-time data happening right in front of them. When you fix those three things, Tier 1 finally becomes doable, sustainable, and effective #LikeABuilder. The Missing Link Between Knowing and Doing. In this week’s episode of The International Classroom Podcast, Sarah Cottinghatt shines a light on something we don’t talk about enough in education—the deciding gap. “We’ve had a cognitive science revolution. We’re getting better at teaching teachers the what and how—but there’s a space in the middle… the knowing–deciding–doing gap.” It’s the gap between understanding a technique and knowing when and why to use it. That’s where professional judgment lives—where teachers notice, interpret, predict, and act. This conversation goes deep into what it means to help teachers think in the moment—not just replicate strategies, but make adaptive, evidence-informed decisions that truly move learning forward. #InstructionalCoaching #TeacherDevelopment #CognitiveScience #ProfessionalJudgment #TeachingAndLearning #AdaptiveTeaching #EducationPodcast #TheInternationalClassroomPodcast
