This week, I was privileged to partner with Transitional Solutions Inc. (TSI) and SDMAP (Strathcona District Mutual Assistance Program) to deliver an Information Officer Awareness course for industry members. When an emergency happens in an industrial community, the public isn’t just watching the response — they’re asking: “Am I safe, and can I trust you?” A few takeaways: 📢 Be a good neighbour. Communities expect clear, timely, and accurate communication when crises emerge. Your residents want to feel safe and be kept informed. It's your responsibility to do both through your communications. 📢Establish presence and credibility before the crisis. Trust is built in everyday interactions with plant tours, open houses, outreach programs, risk awareness education and community contributions — so when an emergency occurs, your voice is already familiar and credible. 📢What happens behind the fence doesn’t stay behind the fence. Flaring, smoke, odours, or sirens are visible and felt by the community. That creates a responsibility to be accountable and tell people what's happening and how you’re responding. 📢You’re all painted by the same brush. In regions where facilities cluster together, the poor response of one company reflects on the whole sector. Be a team player. 📢Your license to operate is at stake. Trust, reputation, and community support are as critical as compliance. Additionally, your employees often live, work, and play within your operating community. Make them proud to be part of your company. 📢 Understand how to reach your audiences. Where is your community going for information? Are there community social media groups with a wide reach? Remember - you need a presence where they're going for their info. While this particular course was geared towards ICS and the role of the Information Officer within Incident Management Teams, the workshop can be delivered to industry across Canada and customized for regional needs. If your company is interested in this type of training for your leadership, comms and EM teams, please reach out and let's get you prepared to communicate during your emergency event. “In every emergency, clear communication is the difference between success and failure. Be prepared to respond and always put people first." #Industry #OilandGas #Petrochem #Utilities #EmergencyManagement #CrisisCommunications #InformationOfficer #PIO #Preparedness #Communication
