My perspective: AI will continue to expand its functional intelligence and surpass human abilities in specific domains (computation, memory, speed), but it cannot compete with humans in conscious experience, moral awareness, or spiritual cognition.

A lovely piece about the role of AI in science but I think it speaks more about the premise of science in its pursuit of reality and causative explanations. In short, AI conquers scale but not complexity, and certainly not meaning-making, when in comes to understanding our reality. There is still the nuance of the art in science. And as for science, I think it's nicely summed up in the word "simulacra". We dissect reality through a subjective filter of perception and communication - let's not assume that the picture we paint, however pleasing to the eye or detailed in minutiae, is anything more than a poor facsimile of the reality. From Brain Evolution to Artificial Intelligence: A Cognitive Continuum To understand the rise of artificial intelligence, it is useful to take a step back and look at a much longer trajectory: the evolution of the human brain itself. AI does not emerge in isolation. It is part of a continuous process through which humans have extended their cognitive abilities via tools, symbols, and technologies. Early humans such as Homo habilis began this journey by crafting simple tools. This was not merely a technical achievement, but a cognitive one: the ability to mentally anticipate an action before executing it. Tools became early extensions of human cognition. With Homo erectus, cognitive complexity increased. Brain expansion was accompanied by planning, social organization, and control of fire. Humans were no longer just reacting to their environment — they were actively shaping it. Later, Neanderthals demonstrated sophisticated symbolic behaviors, including rituals and the use of pigments, suggesting advanced interpretation of the world rather than simple perception. Meaning, not just survival, became central to cognition. With Homo sapiens, the evolution of intelligence shifted toward connectivity and abstraction rather than brain size alone. Language, art, writing, and science enabled knowledge to accumulate across generations. Intelligence became collective. Today, artificial intelligence represents a new stage in this long evolution. Memory, pattern recognition, reasoning, and decision support are increasingly shared with artificial systems. We are entering an era of distributed cognition, where intelligence emerges from the interaction between humans and machines. Seen from this perspective, AI is not a rupture with human nature. It is a continuation of humanity’s long-standing tendency to externalize and enhance cognition through technology. The real question is not whether AI will transform our world — it already has — but how we ensure that this transformation remains aligned with human values, limitations, and societal needs.
