Last week, I had the opportunity to share my take on the future of #leadership development as part of Training Industry, Inc.’s Voices in L&D series. My session was called Designing Leadership Support for the Messy Middle of Work, and it centered on a question I keep coming back to: Are we giving leaders more content, or are we helping them lead better in the moments that count? My trusted colleague and fellow thought leader in this space, Mordy Golding, recently framed it this way: Leadership development can’t only be just-in-case. It also has to become just-in-time. That distinction matters. Because most leaders I work with aren’t short on effort. They’re short on capacity, clarity, and usable support when pressure hits. ·      A leader may know how to coach, but twenty minutes before a hard conversation, they may still need help finding the right opening. ·      A leader may understand the importance of communication, but when they’re asked to explain a major change to their team, they may still need help making the message feel relevant and practical. ·      A leader may know they should prioritize, but when everything feels important, urgent, or just loud, they may still need a way to sort through what actually deserves their attention. That’s the gap I’ve been building toward lately. Not because leaders need more content. Because they need support that helps them apply what they already know in the moments where leadership actually gets tested. Imagine a future where leadership development isn’t about asking leaders to step away from the work to learn one more thing. Super solid advice Sara. One thing stood out as common and important - a leader might know what to do but they still need to be precise and thoughtful given the unique nature of the person / audience. Same message might need to a little (or a lot!) different based on who's receiving it - one of the most challenging parts of leading, more true the bigger the audience! Thanks Sara :)
