Imagine a battery you can 3D print that could power a spacecraft for 20 years. This story was genuinely fascinating to write. You hear nuclear and think "reactor" - betavoltaics are the opposite, no chemical reaction, no combustion, just tritium isotopes quietly degrading. An Adelaide company is working towards commercialisation of an addictive manufacturing (3D printed) process that is world leading. These little dyanamos could be placed in a satellite or a weather radar in the middle of the ocean and power them for decades.

It was a pleasure to welcome Dr. Nejib Chekir from Liburdi Group of Companies to the Alberta Next-Generation Additive Manufacturing (ANGAM) Lab at the University of Alberta. We had productive discussions on strengthening our collaboration in laser-beam directed energy deposition (DED-LB) and laser-based treatments of metallic and ceramic materials, with a strong focus on defence and nuclear applications in Canada.
