Do you know how I motivated my employees in the early days of Hotmail? Some of them till today. Remember what we did? We had an hourly count of how many people had signed up for hotmail.com and each of us in the company got a pager. And every hour we would get a page giving us an accurate count of how many people had signed up for Hotmail in that hour, number of people that had signed up in that hour, and the total count this one number kept. Everyone in the company together. That is the power of a subconscious number to keep employees motivated. I cannot think of a better motivation tool than this till today, almost 26 years later, people feel that they were part of the genesis of a great company.
