Course-Development in Flux: AI, Partnerships & Global SME Teams We’re living through one of the biggest shifts in education: AI partnerships with edge-companies, industry-academic alliances, and instructional design teams spread across time zones; creating complexity, yes but also opportunity. 📌 What the recent headlines tell us: • California State University partnered with tech giants including OpenAI and Microsoft to provide AI training to 460 k students and 63 k faculty/staff. • Wiley and Perplexity announced an AI-search partnership to integrate trusted scholarly content into requests by learners and educators, underlining how content + AI = new learning models. • According to surveys, while 84 % of higher-ed professionals report some personal/professional AI use, far fewer feel confident in ethical integration—revealing a major gap between adoption and readiness. 🔧 From my experience (SME leader, curriculum director, global project manager), here are what successful teams are doing: • SMEs + IDs + AI working side-by-side. AI is drafting outlines, pulling research, SMEs are validating, contextualizing, bringing domain nuance. • Project managers across time zones using tools (e.g., asynchronous collaboration platforms, clear governance check-lists) to avoid bottlenecks and maintain consistency despite geographic separation. • Ethics & quality embedded early. Every outline, every module is reviewed not just for content accuracy but for cultural relevance, equity, data-privacy and alignment with learning objectives. • Partnerships managed with purpose, not hype. When a university teams with an AI-provider, they don’t just get the license they get the framework, the training, the human-in-the-loop design that guarantees value. ❓My question to the community: As we accelerate production of courses empowered by AI and built by dispersed SME‐teams: how are you ensuring quality doesn’t become the casualty of speed? What AI won’t fix in corporate learning? AI is a tool, not an architect of culture. It accelerates personalization, automates routine work, and delivers analytics — but it won’t solve issues of accountability, trust, leadership example, motivation, or the integration of learning into the operational model of the business. ❌Key limitations of AI ◾️ Accountability and leadership. Technology doesn’t create a skills strategy. Without a clear leadership position tied to business outcomes, AI tools will remain beautifully designed dashboards with little real impact. The main barrier to implementation is not technology, it’s leadership and organizational readiness. ◾️ Cultural commitment to learning. A personalized bot can’t replace a culture of continuous development; it can either amplify or undermine it (especially if learning turns into a mere “checklist”). Employees want growth - skills, AI literacy, and career advancement, but motivation requires a systemic approach to recognition and progression. ◾️ Interpersonal skills and trust. Communication, influence, and negotiation can be simulated, but the genuine emotional experience can’t be replicated without real interactions and feedback from colleagues. ◾️ Psychological safety. Learning always involves risk - making mistakes, asking “naïve” questions, or trying something new in front of others. No technology can create conditions where that risk feels safe. It’s a leadership responsibility to show that mistakes aren’t punished but explored. ◾️ Ethical and strategic modeling. Decisions about which skills to prioritize, whom to retrain, and what to automate are not algorithmic - they are ethical and strategic. AI can suggest options, but it cannot define what is fair, sustainable, or aligned with the company’s mission. AI in corporate learning is not a performance booster, but an amplifier. It reveals possibilities, but it cannot turn them into culture, trust, or accountability without people. Investing in people, and in how they collaborate with AI, is what brings lasting business impact. Algorithms now influence who gets feedback, how learning gaps are identified, and even which students receive extra support. But here’s the challenge, AI reflects the data it’s trained on, and that data can carry the fingerprints of human bias. If we don’t build equity into AI, we risk automating inequity at scale. Education leaders have an opportunity and an obligation to shape the moral architecture of this new era. That means asking: 1. Who benefits from AI-driven insights? 2. Whose data trains these models? 3. Who is accountable when technology gets it wrong? Building fair classrooms in the age of AI isn’t just about better code. AI Training Is Missing the Mark. Here’s Why We Need to Rethink It! We keep talking about the need to “upskill” in AI but too often, the training being rolled out focuses on tools and technicality, not human application and collaboration. As someone delivering AI training across industries, I’m seeing a clear pattern: Most AI curriculums are teaching how to build AI, not how to work with it. That’s a huge gap. Because the real opportunity isn’t in coding AI systems it’s in augmenting human roles with AI confidence, ethics, and creativity. The truth? Business professionals don’t need to become data scientists. They need to learn how to think, collaborate, and problem-solve with AI in their existing roles from marketing to project management, design to operations. That’s why frameworks like innovation of AI Collaboration Blueprints and the AI Confidence Indicators exist to make AI practical, ethical, and human-centred. If we keep training people to build AI instead of partnering with it, we’ll keep widening the skills gap instead of closing it. Google has outlined a vision for the Future of Learning. The focus is clear: AI will change how we learn, teach and develop capability. But the central message is not about automation. It is about deepening learning, not replacing the human educator. 1. The first major shift is from standardised instruction to adaptive learning. AI can adjust to individual pace and depth. The purpose is DEEPER UNDERSTANDING, not faster completion. 2. Second, the human role becomes even more central. Educators, leaders, and facilitators provide interpretation, context and guidance. AI can support explanation and practice, but it cannot replace the REFLECTIVE and RELATIONAL work required for personal development. The SKILLS THAT MATTER most remain human: reflection, communication, judgment, collaboration, adaptability. 3. Third, responsible use of AI is essential. At scale, learning must be guided by ethics and clarity of purpose. Assessment models will need to evolve to measure GENUINE UNDERSTANDING and REAL-WORLD APPLICATION, rather than the ability to generate a response. On a personal note: this direction reflects what I already see in organisations that learning has the most impact when it is CONTEXTUAL, SUPPORTED and LINKED to clear goals.
