The thickness of paint on the car body is measured using special digital devices (paint thickness gauges) that operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction (for steel) or eddy currents (for aluminum), or ultrasound (for plastics), and measure the thickness of the paint (in micrometers, µm) on a metal substrate, with standard factory paint typically being 90-180 µm.
