Scaling your HR function doesn't mean hiring an army of HR professionals overnight. Many growing companies make the mistake of either under-investing in HR until problems explode or over-building infrastructure they don't yet need. The smart approach is modular. Start with core foundations like compliant hiring practices, clear employment contracts, and basic performance frameworks. As you grow from 20 to 50 employees, introduce structured onboarding and benefits administration. At 50 to 100, you need dedicated HR leadership and employee relations protocols. Beyond 100, consider specialized roles like talent acquisition and learning and development. The key is building systems that scale with you, not before you. Invest in HR technology early because good software grows with your needs and costs less than hiring mistakes.
