⚡ Why React.memo Often Makes Performance Worse⚡ Many developers add React.memo hoping to speed up their app. The truth is, in many cases, it makes things slower. Let me explain what really happens under the hood. React.memo works by comparing the old props with the new props of a component. If the props are the same, React reuses the last rendered output instead of re-rendering the component. Sounds good, right? But here is the hidden cost. 1. The comparison itself takes time. For simple props like numbers or strings, the cost is low. But when props are objects, arrays, or functions, React.memo has to do a shallow comparison every time. This adds extra work on each render cycle. 2. Many times, developers pass new object or function references on every render. For example, inline arrow functions or objects created inside the parent render. Even if the actual data is the same, React.memo sees them as different because the reference is new. This means React.memo will re-render anyway, plus it already spent time doing the comparison. 3. React.memo is best only for components that: • Are pure and stable in their props • Render heavy UI that is expensive to draw again • Receive primitive props that do not change often If you use React.memo everywhere without checking, you often end up with worse performance because of unnecessary shallow checks. In real projects, I have seen apps slow down simply because developers overused it. The key lesson: Always measure before you optimize. React.memo is a tool, not a default. Here are some tips I use in real projects: 1. Use React.memo – It prevents unnecessary re-renders of components that do not change. 2. Code splitting – Load only what is needed with React.lazy and Suspense. 3. Pagination and infinite scroll – Don’t load thousands of records at once. 4. Virtualized lists – Libraries like react-window render only what is visible. 5. Optimize images – Always compress and use next-gen formats like WebP. 6. Avoid inline functions – Move them out so React doesn’t re-create them every render. 7. Keep dependencies light – Sometimes removing a heavy library makes the app faster than adding another optimization. I have seen these steps bring clear improvements in projects, especially when scaling apps for high traffic. ✅ Yes, I built another todo app. No, I'm not sorry. Here's why: Sometimes the "simple" projects teach you the most. This wasn't just any todo app though. This was my "let me master the MERN stack properly" project. What I learned: 📚 MongoDB schema design (harder than it looks) 🔄 RESTful API best practices ⚡ Optimistic UI updates 🎨 Clean component architecture 🐛 Error handling that doesn't suck The Stack: - MongoDB + Mongoose ODM - Express.js (via Next.js API routes) - React 19 with TypeScript - Node.js - Tailwind CSS for styling Cool features: ✨ Real-time updates without refresh 🎯 Proper loading states ❌ Error handling that actually helps users 📱 Fully responsive ♿ Keyboard accessible The "aha" moment: Finally understanding the difference between optimistic updates and pessimistic updates. UI feels SO much faster with optimistic updates. Real talk: Everyone says "it's just a todo app" but getting the user experience RIGHT is actually challenging. How do you handle network failures? What if the API is slow? How do you show loading states without being annoying? These are the questions that keep developers up at night 🌙 My todo list for this todo app: ✅ Basic CRUD operations ✅ Responsive design ✅ Error handling ⬜ Drag and drop reordering (coming soon!) ⬜ Categories/tags ⬜ Due dates Sometimes you need to build the basics really well before moving to the fancy stuff.
