An interesting investigation, made by Predli, on token use for different languages highlights that English is the king when it comes to cost. It is no surprise that most models have optimized token use for English, that is the main language a lot of LLMs are trained on. But I was a bit surprised over the amount it differs between languages (my lack of understanding diferent languages might influences that). With this in mind, if you are operating a system in language that is not English it might be worth to do the LLM call in English to lower your cost. It also mean that you context window means very different things depending on what language you use. Definitely worth a read: https://lnkd.in/d3qcKc7u Anyone that has optimized cost of LLM usage by changing what language you use?

📝 To discuss 'language' in #tech nowadays is commonly in association with LLMs, but this focus leaves an open question as to the impacts of having one dominant language in the design of tech. What are the impacts of using English to code and construct the digital space? This month, I explore the power dynamics that are embedded in language and what those dynamics mean in a digital era where English is the 'lingua franca'. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/ehh6_b8u

#み/ 14 CDACINDIA, BHASHINI - (Digital India BHASHINI Division), and Bureau of Indian Standards, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology initiative, organized a half-day Workshop on Digital Standards for Indian Languages, titled: “Akshar - Coded Character Set and Composition Rules, Language: Hindi,” on 4 September, 2025. AKSHAR defines the Unicode Character Repertoire and grammar for valid syllable formation (Akshar) using Augmented Backus Naur Formalism (ABNF), ensuring that digital text is consistently represented across systems. The focus on Hindi digital standardization is absolutely critical for improving digital literacy and inclusion across India. The key discussions centered on creating robust and unified frameworks for Hindi input methods, ensuring consistent rendering across all platforms. One of the biggest challenges we face is that most existing software remains inherently script-centric, leading to fragmented standards and inconsistent user experiences when dealing with India's diverse linguistic landscape. For that reason, it's inspiring to see the commitment to building a truly multilingual internet for users. https://lnkd.in/gkhf7CJ9 #Bhashini #AksharWorkshop #IndianLanguages #DigitalIndia #LanguageTechnology

Someone reminded me of my Chimmaya today, and I decided to share Chimmaya is a simple short story in German language, designed for basic users of German language. It is intended to meet the demands of the users' comprehension skills. It also enriches users' vocabulary and is therefore suitable for A1 and A2 Levels according to the Common European Framework for Reference for Language (CEFRL). The text is structured into eleven chapters written mostly in the present tense. Evidently, there already exist several short stories in German for beginners, however, Chimmaya is unique, in that, it adopts the Nigerian setting which makes it easier for the Nigerian students to relate well with its characters and plot, thereby facilitating the comprehension of the story as well as the German vocabularies. It is therefore suitable for beginners in the early years of the junior secondary school, senior secondary school, preliminary level in colleges of education and universities, and private candidates learning basic German. It may also be found useful for intermediate German studies. If you teach German in primary, secondary, or tertiary institutions, you could request bulk copies at a discounted rate.
