MEET THE PROJECT TEAM | Reframing content moderation in Africa: Labour, systems, and information integrity in platform governance 👨💻 View the project page 🔗 https://bit.ly/4eTTpnU Much of the current debate on information disorder has focused on content itself: its spread, amplification, and impact. Yet, relatively less attention has been given to the systems and labour structures that underpin how such content is governed. At the core of these systems are content moderators, whose work remains largely invisible despite being central to the functioning of digital platforms. This project explores labour-driven governance models by connecting labour conditions, platform governance systems, and information integrity outcomes. This study, led by Dr Kola Ijasan, Naila Govan-Vassen, Zara Schroeder and Leslie Dwolatzky, uses a qualitative research design with comparative case studies, key informant interviews and in-country engagement in #SouthAfrica, #Rwanda and #Nigeria. Together, these cases capture variation in governance approaches, labour conditions, and platform dynamics, strengthening both the analytical depth and policy relevance of the work. Research objectives: 📲 Examine how content moderation systems, labour conditions, and governance frameworks interact to shape information integrity outcomes on digital platforms in South Africa, Rwanda, and Nigeria; 📲 Map the structure and operation of content moderation systems across selected digital platforms; 📲 Assess the labour conditions and institutional arrangements shaping content moderation work; 📲 Identify governance and policy gaps and develop targeted, context-sensitive recommendations; and 📲 Generate comparative insights that inform regional approaches to platform governance in Africa. #InformationIntegrity #InformationDisorder #Rwanda #Nigeria #SouthAfrica #ContentModeration Open Society Foundations

Multi-stakeholder platforms are everywhere. Influence isn’t. In food systems, platforms are set up to bring actors together, align interests, and improve coordination. Yet many of them never shape a single real decision. The experience from Kenya in this SNRD Africa article puts the spotlight somewhere slightly uncomfortable. Impact depends on how a platform is built and run day to day. You can have the right mix of stakeholders, regular meetings, and open exchange—and still see very little movement on policy, investment, or implementation. The difference shows up in the underlying structure: - Clear governance that defines purpose, roles, and links to formal decision-making - Coordination that connects discussions with concrete follow-up across institutions - Learning processes that allow the platform to adapt as conditions change One line from the article stayed with me: “Coordination does not mean control — it creates conditions for voluntary alignment.” That idea carries quite a bit of weight. Many platforms create space for exchange, but struggle to carry decisions through complexity, competing interests, and shifting priorities. 💡 If you’re working with or funding these platforms: How clearly is their influence defined? Where do discussions actually land after the meetings? What changes because this platform exists? Here's the article: https://lnkd.in/dAtMWjc7 Disclaimer: SNRD Africa is my client. #DevelopmentCooperation #FoodSystems #MultiStakeholder #Governance #PolicyMaking #AgSys #WE4R #africa

As a business, you can be recognized and still remain irrelevant. Yes! 💯 A few months ago, during a school project on building digital presence for SMEs in Ghana, I intentionally focused on the agriculture and agro-processing sector outside Accra. During my research, I came across Tevonwa Limited, a company that reportedly received national recognition under the Government of Ghana’s SME Growth and Opportunity (GO) Programme. But here is what caught my attention: 😌 Despite the recognition, there was very little accessible information about the business online. 🤔 1. No visible business location 2. No accessible contact information 3. No active social media presence 4. Almost no digital footprint beyond reports of recognition This made me reflect on an important issue affecting many SMEs across Africa: Recognition alone does not build relevance. 💯 In today’s digital economy, visibility builds trust. Before customers, investors, or partners engage your business, they first search for you online. 👌 And when they search... What do they find? 🙄 A strong digital presence is no longer optional. Businesses must intentionally invest in branding, storytelling, communication, and visibility to remain relevant and accessible. As a Digital Storyteller and Media Strategist, I help brands and SMEs build visibility through strategic communication, storytelling, and digital media positioning. Recognition may open the door. Relevance is what keeps you in the room. Have a word to share?? Let's get interactive 🤭 #DigitalStoryteller #MediaStrategist #DigitalMarketing #SMEs #BrandStrategy #DigitalPresence #Storytelling #Ghana #LinkedIn

Reflecting on the recently concluded North Central Regional Technical and Political Validation Workshop for the National Regional Development Policy 2026-2030, where I had the privilege of strategically supporting the UNDP Nigeria with Digital communications to enhance visibility, I am reminded that for development to work, it cannot be “one size fits all”. Every region in Nigeria has its own unique strengths, and this workshop in Lafia, Nasarawa State, was designed to help participants discover how to unlock them. Here are a few lessons that stood out for me that could affect us all; - True development may occur only when we turn our regions into actual hubs for jobs, innovation, and industry based on their comparative advantage. - A policy is just paper if the people don’t own it. This session was designed to make sure the real voices, struggles, and hopes of everyday Nigerians shape how these regional commissions will actually serve the masses. - Shifting from fragmented growth to teamwork is feasible if we stop working in silos and start coordinating strategically. The Ministry of Regional Development and UNDP brought together government leaders, traditional rulers, private sector representatives, academia, and civil society to discuss and advance the conversation on regional development in Nigeria, with the aim of incorporating the strategic interests and aspirations of Nigerians from all strata of life, because this policy is only as strong as the people who own it. Therefore, this workshop actively takes into consideration the real voices, ideas, and frustrations of everyday Nigerians into its framework, hoping that the Regional Development Commissions will be built on true community ownership and citizen participation from day one, proving that when you design policy with the people instead of just for them, you build a foundation for governance that actually delivers for the masses. #RegionalDevelopment #NoelsInsight #InclusiveGrowth #NorthCentral #PolicyToPractice

Portfolio Verification Pilot If your impact results will shape funding decisions, board oversight, investor or LP updates, or public credibility — then the highest-risk moment isn't the report itself. It's the moment before it goes out. That's where a verification pilot helps. Picture a youth employment fund deploying GHS 4 million across three Ghanaian regions. Twelve implementing partners. One quarterly board update. By the time the headline number — "6,800 youth gained sustainable employment" — reaches the LP, it has passed through: → Field officers in Tamale, Kumasi, and Cape Coast → Three regional aggregators using different definitions of "sustainable" → A central programme team working from a summary spreadsheet → A board paper drafted under deadline pressure Nobody is careless. But by the time it lands, nobody can fully defend the 6,800 either. That is governance risk hiding inside polished reporting. What a verification pilot does — practical, not theoretical: 1️⃣ Select 5–10 headline claims — the ones donors and boards will quote 2️⃣ Map the evidence pathway — trace each claim back to source records 3️⃣ Stress-test the chain — definitions, traceability, partner consistency, target pressure 4️⃣ Run independent sampling — re-check a sample without bias, the way an auditor would 5️⃣ Assign confidence scores + remediation actions — colour-coded label per claim, with specific fixes Why now: Across Africa, MEL and impact reporting teams are scaling fast and adopting digital tools. But speed without verification structure creates governance risk. The faster the portfolio grows, the more the unverified claims compound. Who it's for: Funds, NGOs, implementers, and institutions across Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, and Senegal that want to pressure-test claims before audits, board reviews, donor reports, or LP updates. Polished doesn't mean verified. — What's the highest-stakes impact claim your team is reporting this quarter? #MEL #ImpactMeasurement #PortfolioVerification #Governance #DonorReporting #Accountability #DevelopmentSector #ImpactInvesting #Ghana #Africa

As an M&E officer working across the Southern Africa region, one of the most profound parts of my work is sitting at the intersection of data and humanity. We don't just collect figures, we capture stories that would otherwise go untold. In the NGO space, Monitoring & Evaluation is often seen as a compliance exercise. A box to tick before the donor report goes out. But I've come to see it as something far more powerful, it is the conscience of a programme. A few things I've learned in this work: Communities are not data points. When we train community health workers in rural Mozambique or track literacy outcomes in Zambia's Copperbelt, every indicator represents a real person navigating real challenges. Good M&E asks uncomfortable questions. Are we actually reaching the most vulnerable? Is this intervention working or are we measuring what's easy instead of what's meaningful? Impact is not a moment it's a trajectory. Baseline, midline, endline. The discipline of longitudinal thinking forces us to be honest about change over time, not just at the end of a project cycle. Southern Africa is home to some of the most resilient communities and innovative development work on the continent. But too often, that impact evaporates when a project closes because it was never properly documented, analysed, or shared. M&E done well is an act of respect. It says: your experience matters enough to be measured, understood, and acted upon. #MonitoringAndEvaluation #NGO #SouthernAfrica #ImpactMeasurement #DevelopmentWork #SocialImpact #MEL #CommunityDevelopment #DataForGood #Africa
