Recruiters Seek Genuine Connection with Candidates on LinkedIn

A candidate pinged me on LinkedIn this morning. Said they’d reached out to several of us at IU Health before landing in my inbox. Every single recruiter responded the same day. I shared the win with my team in Teams. The line I sent them: “Love the sense of urgency.” There’s a whole industry built around perfecting cold outreach. Better hooks. Better personalization. Better subject lines. All of it matters when you’re starting the conversation. But the moment a candidate raises their hand and reaches out to you, the rules flip. They aren’t evaluating your prose. They’re evaluating whether you actually want them. A 24-hour delay isn’t a delay. It’s an answer. Only 19% of candidates hear back from a recruiter within 24 hours (Sense Talent Engagement Survey, via HR Dive). So when one tells you every recruiter at your shop replied the same day, that’s not just a nice compliment. That’s a market gap your team is sitting inside. The sourcers who win this market aren’t writing the cleverest templates. They’re answering the LinkedIn ping in 12 minutes instead of 12 hours.

A few people have asked what I'm planning to share on here now that I'm posting more regularly. The honest answer is that it will mostly come directly from the work itself. Observations from retained search assignments. Conversations with senior candidates about how they actually make career decisions Trends I'm seeing across infrasthcture markets in the UK, Canada and the UAE. And occasionally the reality of how senior hiring processes play out, including the parts that rarely get discussed openly. What it won't be is a stream of job adverts or generic hiring advice (not all the time anyhow). There's plenty of that on Linkedin already and it doesn't reflect how A2 Talent operates. I've been having a lot of first conversations with candidates lately. They're exhausted. And honestly, a little lost. The job market shifted faster than most people expected. Tactics that were working for them even a few months ago are producing far fewer results today. You find out a recruiter wasn't working your search the hard way. Six weeks in, you call for an update. You get a version of "still looking." Here's a better test. Before you engage anyone, ask them to send you five LinkedIn profiles of candidates who fit your role within 48 hours. No commitment. No fee conversation. Just: "Can you show me you understand what I need?" If they can't do it in 48 hours, they either don't understand the role or don't have the tools to find the right people fast. Either way, that's useful information before you've spent six months waiting. A good recruiter with the right network should be able to send qualified profiles within two days. The reason most don't? Nobody asked them to prove it upfront. Set the expectation early. You'll find out quickly who's actually working your search.

Something I’ve noticed during my job search: I constantly see career coaches advising applicants to: -message hiring managers -bypass the application pile -network directly -ask for referrals -“humanize yourself beyond the resume” At the same time, I see recruiters and talent teams talking about: -overwhelming application volume -inbox overload -message fatigue -hundreds or thousands of applicants per role What I don’t see very often are hiring managers posting: “Yes, someone cold messaged me thoughtfully and I hired them.” Or: “A candidate bypassed the system in a smart way and it absolutely worked.” That’s the part I feel is missing from the conversation.Not because networking doesn’t matter, clearly it does, but because there seems to be very little discussion around: -what actually works now -what gets ignored -what feels authentic vs transactional -where the line is between initiative and noise Feels like there’s a missing “closing the loop” conversation happening in the modern hiring market. The market is creating a new kind of recruiter right now. Not necessarily the loudest recruiter. Or the recruiter sending the most outreach. The recruiter who feels credible immediately. That credibility now comes from things candidates can verify before replying: Visible reputation. Consistency. Social proof. Public interactions. Reviews from real people. Candidates used to enter conversations hoping recruiters were trustworthy. Now they look for evidence first. That shift is subtle. But it’s changing recruiting faster than most firms realize.
