How i create my Problem List Most growers don’t fail because they lack effort. They fail because they don’t anticipate problems before they show up. Given the current climate unpredictability, one of the smartest ways to protect yourself as a grower is to build a production problem list. This simply means listing everything that can go wrong in your production cycle—and putting mitigation strategies in place before they happen. This is how I personally think, build models, and design production strategies. I start with one core question: What can stop me from hitting my target kg per stand? That single question forces clarity on total yield. From there, I split problems into two broad groups: Biotic factors (living threats) These include insect pests and diseases—whiteflies, thrips, aphids, leaf miners, and the usual suspects. On the disease side: damping-off at nursery stage, bacterial leaf spot, early and late blight, among others. Because I already understand their life cycles and the conditions that favour population explosions, I don’t wait to “react.” I design preventive management systems from day one. Abiotic factors (non-living stressors) This is where many growers lose control, especially in open-field production. You can’t control sunlight, rainfall, temperature, or humidity. But here’s the part most people miss: Abiotic stress often creates biotic problems. Weak plants invite pests and diseases. So I focus first on what I can control—nutrition. I build an integrated nutrition program, select varieties with tolerance to specific conditions, and support plants with biostimulants to improve resilience and productivity. This approach doesn’t eliminate risk—but it drastically reduces surprises. This is one of my simple  strategies. A £2.5 million, three-year initiative has been launched to help UK farmers combat light leaf spot, now the most damaging disease affecting oilseed rape, with losses exceeding £300 million. The project, Light Leaf Spot Enhancing Resistance And reducing Susceptibility with EDiting (LLS-ERASED), brings together farmers, breeders, crop scientists, and agronomists to develop precision-bred oilseed rape varieties that are less susceptible to disease, utilising advanced breeding tools without the introduction of foreign DNA. These new varieties will be trialled on commercial farms, supported by real-time disease forecasting and decision-support tools. The effort aims to rebuild crop resilience and support sustainable farming across Europe.
