🔍 IMEC's Big Bet on GaN: Cheaper, Better Power Chips Consider the gallium nitride (GaN) charger for your laptop or phone – it's smaller and faster than traditional silicon chargers. IMEC, a leading nano-tech research center, is spearheading a project to enhance this technology and make it even more affordable. 👉 The Main Goal is to develop both low-voltage and high-voltage GaN power devices on massive 300mm wafers. This is a big step up from the current standard. Why This is a Big Deal: 📉 Lower Cost: Using larger wafers significantly reduces manufacturing costs. You can produce more chips on each wafer. ⚡ Better Performance: It allows access to more advanced manufacturing tools. This will enable things like highly efficient power converters for next-gen CPUs and GPUs. 🌍 Broader Impact: This technology is key for more efficient Electric car chargers , Solar panel inverters Power systems for AI data centers and telecom. A Powerhouse Team: IMEC has partnered with major companies to cover the entire process- AIXTRON & Veeco: For growing the GaN crystal layers. GlobalFoundries: A major chip manufacturer. Synopsys: For the chip design software. KLA: For inspection and quality control. The Plan: First, focus on low-voltage devices (100V and below). Then, tackle high-voltage applications (650V and above). 🔍 A key challenge is managing the physical bowing and strength of these large wafers. 👉 IMEC expects to have the full 300mm production capabilities installed by the end of 2025.
