I’m excited to visit with students in the Applied Technology course at University of Nebraska at Omaha about how we’re leveraging generative AI to connect Nebraska’s workforce to opportunity. The course is taught by Dr. Ada-Rhodes Short, the 2025 Nebraska Women in Tech Diversity Champion of the Year, recognized for her leadership in inclusive tech education. AI has become a true thought partner in our work, helping refine ideas, connect concepts, and accelerate impact. One of my go-to tools is Google’s NotebookLM, which I recently used to turn the 37-page “ImagiNE” report developed by the Nebraska Department of Revenue and Nebraska Department of Economic Development on Nebraska’s job growth into a short video overview (linked below). AI can inspire new ideas, but it never replaces critical thinking. The future belongs to those who understand the source, think deeply, and use these tools to work smarter. Can Empire AI be a national model for public-interest AI research? In a new U.S. News & World Report essay, philanthropist and Empire AI board chair Tom Secunda argues that America’s leadership in artificial intelligence will depend on expanding access to cutting-edge research infrastructure — and cites Empire AI as a blueprint for how the U.S. can support innovation. As Secunda writes: “In my home state of New York, we launched Empire AI… to build and offer AI computation to scientists and researchers… By pooling these resources, Empire AI can offer cutting-edge computing power that would otherwise be fragmented and inaccessible to any individual institution. This democratizes access to AI tools, enabling researchers across fields to explore breakthroughs without being locked into private platforms.” He also notes that Empire AI is already helping attract talent and catalyze innovation in New York: “These initiatives help ensure that breakthroughs strengthen regional economies instead of being siphoned off exclusively to Silicon Valley or overseas.” Empire AI is proud to play a role in advancing academic research, training the next generation of AI leaders, and supporting innovation that serves the public good. As this essay highlights, there is growing national conversation about how America can expand access to high-performance computing to empower universities, researchers, and communities across the country. 🔗 Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/eQPWezTU In partnership with the New York State Executive Chamber, Empire AI brings together: The State University of New York, The City University of New York, Columbia University, Cornell University and Cornell Tech, New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of Rochester, Rochester Institute of Technology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Flatiron Institute at the Simons Foundation. #EmpireAI #ArtificialIntelligence #AcademicResearch #Innovation #PublicGood #HigherEd #AIInfrastructure #ResearchComputing #AIForGood

Whether a young person has access to emergent technologies in school in Scotland can depend on their catchment area. I'd like to see Scotland take a leading role in giving young people access to the technological tools they'll need in the very near future. Over the past year and a half at Dog and Fox I’ve worked with young people, educators, and in local communities to understand how people are navigating the rapid proliferation of AI in their day-to-day lives, particularly in education. For me, it’s about trust, equity, participation, and making sure everyone can meaningfully take part. I joined egg at a gathering at The Balmoral, a Rocco Forte Hotel headed up by business leaders Nathalie Agnew FCIPR, Mairi McInnes and Irene Roberts exploring emerging uses of AI for business. I was curious to hear how others are building safe, human ways of working with AI right now. There was a real mix of feeling in the room: from begrudging acceptance, to total delight, to careful conversations about safeguarding for vulnerable and young people. Some even said they felt a bit embarrassed to admit they use AI tools for work. One statistic that Kylie Reid mentioned that really struck me was that two-thirds of business leaders say they would NOT hire someone who doesn't have AI literacy skills.* That made me pause and reflect on how the design I've been creating with Data Education in Schools and Professor Judy Robertson around a new curriculum for AI Literacy in Scotland feel all the more urgent. So for now, I want to draw everyone's attention to the fact that not every school in Scotland is equal when it comes to access to these new technologies. Certainly, job roles are changing, and I loved hearing from the brilliant women on the panel about how that's actually a positive, that there are whole new unexplored avenues waiting to be discovered. One question I didn't get to ask is this: How do we make sure we're giving the next generation of business leaders in Scotland (who are now at secondary school) the access they need to explore and shape AI technologies? * https://lnkd.in/eRRV2t9E
