You’ve probably heard the phrase: "The Product Manager is the CEO of the product." It’s a catchy line that conveys a sense of ownership, but it misses a crucial point about the role: Product Managers lead by influence, not authority. Unlike a CEO, a PM typically doesn't have direct reports on their core team. The engineers, designers, and marketers don't work for the PM; they work with the PM toward a shared goal. This fundamental difference is what makes the job both challenging and incredibly rewarding. A better way to visualize the role is as the center of a Venn diagram, sitting at the intersection of User Experience (UX), Technology, and Business. 🔹 The PM is the voice of the User, deeply understanding their needs and pain points. 🔹 They work with Engineers to understand what is technically feasible and how complex a solution might be. 🔹 They align with Business stakeholders to ensure the product is viable and contributes to the company's strategic goals. Think of a PM as a ship's navigator. The navigator doesn't steer the vessel or command the engine room. Instead, they are relentlessly focused on the destination (the vision), interpreting the maps (data and research), and clearly communicating the course to the entire crew. Ultimately, great product management isn't about giving orders. It's about building trust, creating a shared vision, and empowering the team to do their best work. A typical day as a Product Manager balancing design and strategy Being a Product Manager with a design background feels like living in two worlds at once. One side of me wants to prototype everything, while the other is focused on prioritizing the right problems to solve. Most days start with a quick scan of analytics or user feedback, not just to check numbers, but to understand why users behave the way they do. Then comes the stand-up, where I’m aligning with designers, engineers, and sometimes stakeholders who see the product from completely different lenses. It’s a constant dance between strategy and execution. Between thinking, “What’s the business goal here?” and asking, “How will this feel for the user?” Around midday, I’m usually sketching or reviewing wireframes, not to make them “prettier,” but to ensure they communicate intent clearly. Because great UX isn’t just about visuals; it’s about reducing friction in how people achieve what they came for. Later in the day, I might be deep in documentation refining user stories, writing acceptance criteria, or planning the next sprint. It’s not glamorous, but it’s where strategy turns into structure. By evening, I’m reviewing progress and reflecting on trade-offs: Did we move closer to our vision today? Did we make decisions that serve both users and business goals? Balancing design and strategy isn’t easy, but it’s what makes product management exciting. Day 2: How Product Managers Decide What Features to Build Next? Every company has more ideas than it can build. And those ideas come from everywhere - customers, business, SMEs, sales teams, analytics, competitors, and even developers. So, a Product Manager’s job isn’t to come up with all the ideas - it’s to identify which ones truly matter. 🧠 Step 1: Understand the Real Problem Before building anything, PMs dig into why users face an issue. Example: If many users abandon checkout, PMs use tools like Google Analytics, Mixpanel, or Hotjar to find out where the drop happens - slow loading, confusing design, or failed payments. Only after understanding the root cause can they propose a solution that actually works. ⚖️ Step 2: Evaluate Impact vs. Effort Every feature is weighed on: Impact – How much value or revenue will it create? Effort – How complex or costly is it to build? Example: At a food delivery company, the team might have two feature ideas: A “Reorder” button (quick to build, improves convenience) A recommendation engine (takes longer but could increase average order value significantly) Even though the first is easier, the second might bring far higher revenue, so it may be prioritized first. 🎯 Step 3: Align with Product Goals Even great ideas can wait if they don’t align with the product vision or quarterly goals. Frameworks like RICE (Reach, Impact, Confidence, Effort) or MoSCoW help make these trade-offs more objective. 💬 In Summary Product Managers don’t just wait for ideas - they generate them, gather more from across teams, and then analyze and prioritize the ones that will create the highest impact for users and the business. Their real strength lies not in having more ideas, but in choosing the right ones. Product Management isn’t just “building features.” I realized this after my first 2 years of fumbling through PM tasks. Turns out, most PMs don’t really know what the role is—over 60% are still confused about “what does a PM actually do?” Here’s a simple mental model to define the PM role clearly: A PM is responsible for answering these six questions: 👉Where are we going? 👉How will we get there? 👉Which problems should we solve to get there? 👉Are all key stakeholders aligned? 👉What solutions do we build, and how do we deliver them on time? 👉How do we know we’re making progress? Let’s break this down: 📍 Where Are We Going? Define a clear vision that everyone understands. Know your market, your users, and your company goals. Communicate the vision repeatedly—clarity drives alignment. 🛤 How Will We Get There? Build a strategy. Focus on what matters, avoid distractions, and adapt to market changes. A solid plan is the backbone of any successful product. 🔍 Which Problems Should We Solve? Prioritize problems that bring real value to users. Keep checking that these align with your vision. Solve the right problems consistently, not just once a year. 🤝 Are All Key Stakeholders Aligned? Identify the people who influence your success. Communicate transparently, involve them in decisions, and make sure everyone stays on the same page. ⚙️ What Solutions to Build? How to Deliver on Time? Brainstorm solutions, build what users truly need, and deliver reliably. On-time delivery plus real value = happy users. 📈 How Do We Know We’re Making Progress? Measure everything. Track metrics, review regularly, adjust when needed. Every success and failure is a lesson—learn, adapt, and improve. But it’s so much more than that. Here’s what a PM truly does : 1️⃣ Understands users deeply — What problem are we solving? Can you really call yourself a Product Manager if you’re not accountable for the success, or failure, of the product you work on? Most Product Managers want the wrong thing out of the role. - Some want to be Product Designers, obsessed with UI/UX and customer experience. - Some want to be Product Marketers, crafting go-to-market plans and narratives. - Others drift into Agile Delivery or technical architecture, chasing control or influence. All of these traits are required on a Product. What’s missing from most product management job descriptions, and most PM mindsets: ownership of the product’s P&L. Products survive, and teams grow/end, only through pursuit of continuous profit growth. That’s the ultimate measure of success of a Product. Everything else supports that goal. Design-, marketing-, or delivery-focused PdMs often lack the business acumen to manage a product this way. That creates two predictable disconnects: 1) The business assumes it needs to manage the product directly. 2) Those same PMs end up in constant friction with the business, because they feel something fundamental is missing in how they see and manage the product. At the end of the day, if you’re not accountable for the dollars, the P&L, you’re not a Product Manager. You’re a focus-area lead. When we hear "Product Manager," we often think of one role that balances business, tech, and design which is true! However, product management is evolving into specialized tracks, each with its own focus and strengths. Here are a few examples I've seen: - Technical PMs: They are very comfortable with system architecture, APIs, and data. They turn complex tech into customer value and help engineering teams work faster. - Design / UX PMs: They focus on user experience. They care deeply about usability, journeys, and interaction design. They often collaborate closely with designers to create enjoyable products. - Growth PMs: They concentrate on acquiring, retaining, and engaging users. They use experiments and data to drive growth loops and achieve measurable business results. - Platform / Infrastructure PMs: They work behind the scenes. They build essential systems, tools, and services that allow other teams to innovate. - AI PMs: The rising AI PMs. They not only harness powerful models, but also ask: Should we build this? How do we keep it responsible? Each of these roles requires a different lens, a different way of thinking, leading, and making trade-offs. The beauty is: in great organizations, these PMs don’t compete, they complement one another. The generalist PMs exist, connecting dots and setting vision, but specialists make the vision real in unique ways. Few days Ago, my colleagues and I had an interactive online session discussing User Flow, one of the most insightful parts of our product management journey. For me, user flow isn’t just about connecting screens or drawing arrows on a diagram, it’s about understanding the user’s journey, their intentions, and the emotions behind every action they take in a product. It’s the invisible path that guides users from curiosity to clarity, from confusion to completion. When done right, a good user flow doesn’t just make a product work , it makes it feel right. Key Lessons I Took Away: • Great user flows start with empathy — not design tools. • Every click should solve a problem or move the user closer to value. • Simplicity beats complexity — always. • Collaboration makes all the difference.
