Everybody is suddenly an “eLearning developer” because AI can generate slides, quizzes, voiceovers, and even Storyline interactions now. That’s exactly why average instructional designers are about to disappear. The market no longer values people who only know: • Triggers • Layers • Variables • Animations • SCORM publishing Those are execution skills. Not strategic skills. The real value in 2026 is this: Can you design learning that changes behavior? Because AI can already build basic courses faster than most humans. Agree with this completely. According to the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, AI requires Human Oversight. It [AI] should be used as a "dance partner" to process data at scale, but human professionals must make the final decisions.

More and more I see instructional design evolving beyond “which model should we use?” to “how do we combine models to design better learning?” I started off with ADDIE and, to me, it still provides a strong foundation—helping ensure we thoughtfully analyze needs, design intentionally, develop with purpose, implement effectively, and evaluate outcomes. It keeps the work structured and aligned. Models like AGILE compliment this by adding flexibility—short cycles, rapid feedback, collaboration with stakeholders, and continuous improvement as learning needs shift in real time. The most effective approach I've found though isn't an either/or approach—its a hybrid one. Blend models based on context: use ADDIE for clarity and planning, AGILE for iteration and responsiveness, and other frameworks like SAM or design thinking where they add value. Leverage new tools like AI, which can help streamline parts of the process—especially research, content drafting, and identifying gaps—so you can focus more on strategy, judgement, and learner experience. At the center of all of it must always be YOU, the instructional designer: making decisions, interpreting content, and ensuring learning actually drives performance.

A conversation that needs to happen right now. How does an Instructional Designer evolve in the age of AI and simulation-based learning? How do we shift from simply delivering content to creating more opportunities for practice, experimentation, and real-world application? What I’ve realized is that, as IDs and as AI citizens navigating this new space, we also need to understand prompt engineering, how to ask the right questions, apply the right prompts, and guide AI to produce meaningful results. Just as importantly, we need to explore how AI itself can be thoughtfully integrated into our learning solutions.
