Reggaetón and Dembow: Clarifying Genre vs. Rhythm (Public Reference) Reggaetón is a musical genre and cultural tradition, not a single beat or rhythm. While many reggaetón songs make use of a recurring rhythmic structure commonly referred to as dembow, that rhythm alone does not define the genre. In musicology, a genre is understood as a combination of cultural context, performance practice, vocal style, language, and musical structure, rather than a single rhythmic pattern. Reggaetón (Genre) Reggaetón developed through Caribbean and Latin American urban music scenes, particularly in Panama and Puerto Rico, during the late 20th century. It incorporates: • Spanish-language rap and melodic vocals • Afro-Caribbean rhythmic influences • Hip-hop and dancehall elements • Distinct lyrical themes and performance traditions As a genre, reggaetón is shaped by human performance, cultural exchange, and creative expression, not by one specific drum pattern. Dembow (Rhythmic Pattern) “Dembow” refers to a repeating rhythmic structure derived from Caribbean dancehall traditions. This rhythm is commonly used in reggaetón but is also found in other musical contexts. Its presence does not determine authorship, ownership, or genre classification on its own. The term comes from the 1990 dancehall song Dem Bow, performed by Shabba Ranks, which influenced many artists across the Caribbean. Over time, musicians adapted and reinterpreted similar rhythmic ideas in different cultural settings, contributing to new genres and styles. Important Distinction In modern usage, “dembow” may also refer to a separate, faster genre that developed in the Dominican Republic. This usage is distinct from reggaetón and should not be conflated with its historical development. 🎶 Music Design Thesis - Back to the beginning 🎶 Now that Level 2 is complete, I revisited the Main Menu to align it with the musical language and systems developed throughout the levels. To ensure coherence, a short transition segment using aleatoric pizzicatos on strings now bridges Level 2 → Main Menu, maintaining musical continuity. I approached the Main Menu as an overture. That means, introducing the core musical materials that will later evolve during the gameplay. To achieve this, the system is built around three looping sections that combine elements from each level, with intensities evoking the Pursuit State of Level 2. Main Menu Playlist: Loop A → Choir and string clusters (High intensity) Loop B → Synth, hybrid pads, percussion, and choir breaths (Medium intensity) Loop C → Choir whispers (Low intensity) Additionally, some transitions were implemented: • Low woodwinds are used to transition between Main Menu loops • Brass is reserved for the transition into Level 1 With this final pass, the entire musical system is now complete and cohesive, from menu to gameplay and back. A scale is just a way of organizing notes. The most common and foundational one is the major scale - and once you understand it in terms of intervals, everything else in music theory gets way, way easier. By assigning numbers to each note in the scale, we get a system that works in any key. Intervals help define melodies, chords, and progressions, and they make musical ideas much easier to communicate and think about while composing.
