🚗 Your car’s Bluetooth might be leaking more than music. A new USENIX paper reveals serious flaws in automotive Bluetooth systems — across 22 cars from 14 brands. Researchers found 128 vulnerabilities and even new attack paths like PBAP data leaks and 0-click MITM pairing bypasses. Critical Vulnerability in KIA Portal: Remote Control Over Millions of Vehicles In June 2024 security researchers discovered a severe flaw in KIA’s dealer portal that allowed attackers through the website alone to read vehicle data, unlock doors and even start the engine of models from 2013 and onward. No physical access was required; only a license plate number and VIN were needed, exposing vehicles and personal data of car owners. Researchers demonstrated how within seconds a malicious actor could gain remote control over key vehicle functions. KIA patched the issue after responsible disclosure, yet similar weaknesses were later found in other manufacturers including BMW, Fiat and Ferrari. The lesson is clear: modern vehicles are fully connected IT systems with APIs, access tokens and vulnerabilities.
