Publishing companies putting out bad books based on the fact the author has a high social media following is a classic example of the publishing industry putting creativity in second place to money. I've worked with so many incredible authors who, given the chance, would thrive in the traditional publishing world. It just seems to be getting harder and harder to get into. #writing #creativewriting

I worked with a writer who chose self-publishing from the outset and treated it as a professional process. He invested in proper editing, worked closely on the design, and took the time to understand each step involved. The final book reflected that level of care and it stands comfortably alongside traditionally published titles. I've also seen writers approach self-publishing as a quick 'second best' alternative when traditional publishing did not work out. They rushed the process, skipped key steps and aimed to get the book out as quickly - and as cheaply - as possible. This result only served to reinforce the perception that self-published work is lower quality. The difference is not the publishing method. It's the approach. When self-publishing is done properly, it is not second best. Would you agree? #justrightwords #selfpublishedisnotsecondrate #selfpublishing #authorpublishing #opinion Which approach are you taking?

In the publishing industry, trust is the currency. And the only way to build that trust consistently is through rigorous self-editing. I've just released the latest issue of my newsletter, Foundations, dedicated entirely to the craft and business of self-editing. It's not just about grammar; it's about delivering a product that respects the reader's time and investment. My core thesis in this issue: "A well-edited book builds trust. Trust builds a backlist. A backlist builds a career." For authors navigating the transition from hobbyist to professional, this breakdown covers the strategic necessity of the edit. There’s no shortage of advice online about how to write a query letter, but that’s exactly the problem. One article tells you to open with a shocking hook, another says keep it strictly professional, some say include comps, others say skip them. The result? Writers feel overwhelmed, second-guessing every sentence, and often sending out queries that don’t truly showcase the strength of their manuscript. A query letter is your first impression with agents and publishers, and in many cases, it determines whether your manuscript gets read at all. A strong query letter must hook immediately, position your book clearly in the market, demonstrate professionalism and industry awareness, and highlight why you're the right person to write this specific book. But most importantly, it aligns with what agents and publishers actually expect, not just what the internet thinks they want. That’s where we come in. We help you cut through the noise and craft a query letter that is tailored to your story and genre, polished to industry standards, and designed to capture attention and spark requests. If you’re serious about securing representation and increasing your chances of publication, your query letter deserves just as much care as your manuscript. #amwriting #queryletter #publishingtips #writersofinstagram #authorlife #literaryagents #bookpublishing #writingcommunity #aspiringauthor #amwritingfiction #writerssupportingwriters #getpublished #editingservices #ghostwriting #bookmarketing

Stories Rule Press has published a new status update for Fall From Grace, the upcoming sequel to Saving Grace by Mark Posey. Taking a creative approach, the update is presented as a “redacted” progress report—mirroring the tone and structure of the novel itself. It offers a glimpse into the story’s development, highlighting rising tension, narrowing margins for error, and the growing complexity of character motivations. It’s a concise example of how narrative voice can extend beyond the book itself into reader engagement and marketing. Dear authors, 📢Make sure your character's actions and decisions align with their main goal. Sometimes, while writing, authors accidentally make a character too focused on side goals or side events. This can cause the main goal to get neglected. When that happens, the character can seem inconsistent or as if their main goal doesn't really matter. Readers may even question the purpose of the story. Side goals or side events are perfectly fine. They can be a beautiful topping that adds extra flavor to a story, as long as they support progress toward the main goal and keep the story connected. Keeping this connection clear ensures your characters feel believable, relatable to readers, and keeps readers engaged throughout the story. #DevelopmentalEditing #BookEditing #NovelEditing #WritingCommunity #FictionWriting #BookAuthor #FictionAuthor

This!! I’m so passionate about this topic. Some literary agents ask for your social media following because a bigger following will make their job easier, but if they’re choosing based on that and not the actual writing/book, then we’re losing writing as an art form.
