Peter Antevy MD, FAEMS’s lesson about fixing a dangerous curve often comes to my mind. Today, maybe it was triggered by all the silliness of Wisconsin political campaign ads or maybe the goodness of JonJon.jpeg on FB, but I got to thinking about red light cameras. There’s that one intersection in town that has more crashes and more near misses that the others. So, up goes a camera and golly gee, look at all those reckless drivers blowing the red light. So to make some revenue, errr, improve public safety, they start ticketing people for failing to stop. But they’re missing the larger issue. Why, of allll the intersections, is this one a problem? Drivers are law abiding folks everywhere else in town until they get right here, and then they lose all their goodness and get all crazy? 🤨 Are the crashes/near misses happening at a certain time of day, such as during sunrise/sunset and drivers are blinded? Is there some other traffic-related issue such as poor signage or something that contributes to driver cogntive overload? Or, perhaps, is the yellow light too short? Where I lived in Maine, there was one such intersection and when the town extended the yellow light’s duration, people stopped on time. They had a chance to be successful. The system, the environment, caused the undesirable behavior. It wasn’t the people after all. So, next time you, or a politician, points a finger and blames “them”, take a step back, ponder a bit, and consider if there’s more to the story. Where’s The System in the problem?

World Machine 4059 'Dragontail Peak' is out. It's a big update to the veteran terrain generation software, with support for VDM-based terrain making it possible to generate crazy overhanging forms like this one. Learned an important lesson through a simple puzzle. Lessons are everywhere for improvements in functions. Be aware. Be open, then grow.

Accuracy is "capital A" word for municipal minutes generation. Motions need to be accurate, votes accurate, specific procedures followed. When we built MuniMins we were always focusing on accuracy, including an entire subsystem to spot potential problems. Over the past 5 weeks this subsystem has identified some very interesting things: #1 - Board members can't do math. By far the most common issue is motions that have "dollar adjustments" where the starting value, change value, and final value don't add up! #2 - Motion made...and never voted on. A motion is made, great, in-depth discussion occurs, then the chair says "Okay, that was great, next topic." Everyone thinks a vote occurred but it never did! #3 - Where is the/our...? Missing materials, or, a missing presenter throws a wrench in the meeting. Someone who is supposed to be there who isn't seems to be a universal challenge!
