This is an incredibly exciting milestone for both companies. The vision to provide an elegant and efficient mobility solution for us to get out of cars and through our daily lives is not only the right next step for W8less and Trip, but for the world. This is a way to scale impact of autonomy, robotics and bikes — a holy trinity for smart, sustainable ecosystems. We do this using bike paths as “virtual rail” to safely and inexpensively deliver e-bikes. Our little robot tug pulls the e-bike trailer enabling a whole new way to orchestrate sharing. It’s orders of magnitude easier for the robot which merely moves along a well-defined path. It’s also easier for cities to approve and monitor since there’s a well defined geospatial corridor. We keep the bike share as it should be — open to all. The human embraces the joy (and responsibility) of cycling and the city reaps the reward to reduced congestion and improved flow. Instead of trying to autonomize bikes (which is hard and expensive) we focus on a small robot tug that moves the bike rack to you. Once you enter the code in your phone and you’re within reach we release the bike. You’re now the empowered biker who doesn’t need to spend time finding a scooter or walking to a stationary bike rack that’s miles away. What’s not to love??
